decided to embrace the standard autumnal clichés this year, so i’m dipping a toe into reading horror. currently on @tkingfisher.com’s ‘a house with good bones’ and congratulating myself for being brave enough to cope not only with the spookiness but also the protagonist’s insect expertise 🫣

there is no universally agreed upon definition of pornography btw. it’s mostly vibes, and the vibes are very reactionary.

back on here again today and delighted to learn of the existence of a single-issue pinup magazine called ‘Ahaaaaaa!’

i haven’t read heartstopper (ya rarely interests me bc i am a crone), but the concept of representation as “an image of myself i am comfortable seeing” is one i’ll be thinking about for a while

the doctrine of labyrinths series is up there on the list of Reasons I’m Like This - excited to listen!
Let’s read a problematic gay novel!!

@leemandelo.bsky.social and @ayshaufarah.bsky.social join us to discuss “Mélusine,” a delightful but brutal 2005 fantasy novel by Sarah Monette/Katherine Addison.

We discuss puritanical limits placed on queer art and other intense but important (and gay) stuff!

would be genuinely interested in a detailed explanation of how the proposed ban is supposed to work. i’ve read the report and i truly don’t see how bertin’s criteria for what is harmful can be applied, let alone policed. am i missing something?
Over and over, I'm seeing a panic over choking be used as justification for state censorship of pornography. But despite lurid claims, the arguments rarely make sense.

"Of course it's porn!" they say, before going on to mention TikTok, Cosmo, Fifty Shades, Andrew Tate and Sabrina Carpenter.
‘There is no safe way to do it’: the rapid rise and horrifying risks of choking during sex

i think about this documentary all the time
Watched this last night and thought it was really excellent. Thoughtfully tells the story of the American missionary John Chau and his doomed quest to convert the Sentinelese in 2018. As someone who writes a lot about the radicalisation of young men in a very different context it was an eerie watch.

summarising a thing in my lit review about how pushing anti-porn agendas lead to moral panics which can then be utilised to put any form of queer/trans expression into the ‘porn’ category. very cool and normal that a new real-life example of the phenomenon pops up every single day.

This makes it very clear that the calls to ban trans women aren't about 'fairness' or 'advantages'.

You call to ban trans women from a community event without any competition or even any gender restrictions to begin with because you want to ban trans women from existing in public. That's it.
A Labour MP calling for trans women to be banned from parkrun, which, as the name suggests, is people non-competitively running around a park.

There are no winners in this event. There are no losers in this event - bar Jonathan Hinder MP, should he ever take part.

The EHRC is meant to protect everyone’s rights. But internal documents reveal a different story: repeated meetings with anti-trans lobbyists, legal bias, and secret coordination. We filed the FOI. Here’s what we found.

Let’s be honest. The Equality and Human Rights Commission is not acting like a neutral regulator. It is not standing above the fray.

I'll make a thread about danmei censorship in China, shall I? Because I've been dropping articles about this on-and-off for months now, so I might as well repeat or consolidate some of that here.
