Tesco have just sent out an email with a section advertising "Christmas free from food"... Sounds like a recipe for family disharmony!

It struck me when watching an excerpt from Farage's interview last night that "I didn't mean it like that" is the classic response of the school bully in front of a teacher.

To Shap Abbey this afternoon: if you wanted to demonstrate how the buildings and outbuildings in an abbey related to each other this would be an ideal place to go. The abbey was obviously not rich enough to add extra buildings or alter the original plan.

It's Saturday night, so I'm sure you all have the same exciting plan in mind: reading a blog post about Glasgow's 1850s cludgie war.

Our flag does not belong to one creed or to one race. It belongs to one people, the British people.

We will not let our flag be used to intimidate.

A fascinating ramble round IQ tests and AI
In my latest newsletter I look at the shared failings of AI hallucinations and traditional intelligence tests, drawing on recent research.

It’s a literal ramble of a post, with sidetracks to talk about Hayek and @drfrancisyoung.bsky.social (hope you don’t mind.)

Church closures are really not a new development (although this one is in England not Scotland). This 1906 Primitive Methodist chapel was apparently sold to the Church of Christ in 1925, but is now derelict. The original building (date stamped 1906) wrapped round behind the shop on the right.

A visit to the wonderful Song School at St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh. An example of how Phoebe Anna Traquair illustrated the Benedicite on a mural surrounding the space. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement and William Blake is clear.

Haha! It worked!

I scoped out the angle this morning and figured I’d be very lucky to pull it off, but it was surely worth a try, eh?

The important sentence in the IWC report is surely "The Commission recognises that, until more recently, Ofwat was encouraged by the government to scale back its oversight of the sector, that it has paid closer attention to these issues in recent years"

The lovely and very old St Bega's church on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, the oldest church in the Lake District. Nave and chancel date back to Anglo-Saxon times, though much restored in the 19th century.
