It's amazing how many prominent Brexit supporters would rather live in the EU than in Britain

It is ironic (to say the least) that the Church of Scotland wishes to sell off Culross Abbey whilst (as mentioned in the article) part funding the Fife Pilgrim Way Pastor.

Must have been your English teacher's. But the Appleton Tower looked like it was falling down even as early as the 1970's.

Is the accurate term not "useful idiot"?

It would have been good to have had the full information about the track in the broadcast intro in the programme, rather than implying that what was being played was what Rachmaninov heard in the first performance. #radio3

November 22, 2025 at 10:35 PM
True, but the farming methods have changed markedly: far far fewer people working the land, a much less varied landscape nowadays (even over the last 50 years!) Solar farms don't necessarily mean abandoning farming. Crops can be grown round the panels, animal's can graze between them.

I find his claim that the landscape hasn't changed in about 2000 years rather undermines any further argument.

But is it as respectful as Empire (German!) biscuits with poppies on the icing?
November 9, 2025 at 10:49 PM
Thanks for that - the "pip-squeak" slang that I knew from that date (?) referred to what later became a jobsworth. No doubt there's another version current now!

They also became parts of a children's game (all sit in a circle, each child "named" Pip, Squeak or Wilfred, and when the leader called one name all the ones so named had to get up and run round the circle. Great fun when you are 7...
