Happy Lancashire Day! - a picture from "Real Lancashire" - you can change the admin are but not the county boundaries! Furness is "Lancashire beyond the sands".

To Shap Abbey this afternoon: if you wanted to demonstrate how the buildings and outbuildings in an abbey related to each other this would be an ideal place to go. The abbey was obviously not rich enough to add extra buildings or alter the original plan.

A chilly wind this morning, and a very welcome door

The light on Blackness Castle was almost enough to make you forget its history as a prison

Church closures are really not a new development (although this one is in England not Scotland). This 1906 Primitive Methodist chapel was apparently sold to the Church of Christ in 1925, but is now derelict. The original building (date stamped 1906) wrapped round behind the shop on the right.

A visit to the wonderful Song School at St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh. An example of how Phoebe Anna Traquair illustrated the Benedicite on a mural surrounding the space. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement and William Blake is clear.

The lovely and very old St Bega's church on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, the oldest church in the Lake District. Nave and chancel date back to Anglo-Saxon times, though much restored in the 19th century.

Inside St Peter's Heysham is a magnificent hogsback tombstone.

The west side of St Peter's Heysham, with the original Anglo-Saxon doorway now blocked. The narrow window on the south side also appears to be Anglo-Saxon, but must have been moved.

Today is apparently nature photography day, so that's an excuse for picture of an avocet at Leighton Moss. #birds #naturephotography

There has to be something appropriate in watching avocets, for a long time the symbol of the RSPB, in the "Eric Morecambe Hide" at RSPB Leighton Moss. And very lucky to see an avocet chick as well.

Precentor's box (for leading unaccompanied singing in the Scottish tradition) with the pulpit above. From the Tarbat Discovery Centre, in the Old Parish Church at Portmahomack, but placed as they were in the final remodelling of the church in the 1840's. #sermonsonsunday

#windowsonwednesday Inverallan Parish Church Grantown on Spey, funded by the Countess of Seaforth in memory of her husband and son. Built in 1886. The windows are particularly elaborate - this one uses the letter S for Seaforth as the basis for the pattern

Reflecting on a week on Northern Scotland, we came across the museum at Portmahomack - an exemplary use of a former church as a museum that (apart from the wonderful examples of Pictish stone carving) tells the history of the church in an inventive way. A fabulous place with helpful volunteers.
