Many at USIP have told me from the start that the reason the Trump administration has gone after them so aggressively is because of their really beautiful building.

This is great, but why aren’t you brining the candidates who are going to be running against these GOP seats in the next election cycle to these town halls? You need to be elevating whoever is running against John James in 2026.

This is fucked. The Smithsonian is potentially in a position to fight this and I hope they do. Unlike organizations like the Kennedy Center and US Institute of Peace, the Smithsonian's board is controlled by congress, not the president (except the defacto board seats of the VP and Chief Justice)
Trump issues executive order to eliminate ‘anti-American ideology’ from Smithsonian
The order directs the vice president to eliminate what he finds “improper” from the Smithsonian Institution, including its museums, education and research centers, and the National Zoo.

I appreciate the optimism, but this glosses over the real effort and cost involved in swinging back to democracy.
U.S. swing toward #autocracy doesn’t have to be permanent, according to a political scientist who studies global trends. But swinging back to democracy requires vigilance, stamina and election. buff.ly/DM1YCth

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

The only public YES votes are Schumer and Fetterman. They need 7-8 total. KEEP CALLING.

I have to say: Chuck Schumer is a weak man and a fool. This was the one cudgel Dems had. Now it's up to the courts which we new from the beginning were at best going to slow some things down. There's 18 hours left to somehow bring additional pressure to bear. It will be really hard to do that.

The "E" in DOGE stands for efficiency, but is that really the goal? Drastic cost-cutting measures and sweeping tech overhauls with no consideration of downstream effects simply aren't sustainable ... or maybe that's the point 🤔
