the Democratic Party should have 2 major goals for the next time it holds power: (1) completely rebuild the destroyed federal government capacity, and (2) crush the GOP, which enabled so much corruption and immiseration. destroy their funding, jail their leaders, make it so a new party has to emerge

When I was at Stripe, Larry was invited to talk. A ton of employees very respectfully raised concerns based on his open history of being a sexist bigot and Patrick Collison openly told them (in so many words) that they were being whiny and should reconsider if working for Stripe was a good idea.

Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House.

Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity.

They are not the same.

Upgraded to iOS 26, is the new UI a practical joke? This is like…worse in every conceivable way.

I turned down transparency and that helps a bit, but wow is this surprisingly bad.

Sometimes I see people like 20 tweets deep into an argument with Grok. Like, what are you doing brother? You are trying to win an argument with a vending machine.

Just voted in local elections, my local school district has open director positions in multiple districts and at least one candidate in each has a rabidly-anti-trans platform. Blegh :(

When people complain “our country is too polarized now!” it’s always conservatives complaining liberal family members are being meaner to them. But the actual dangerous polarization is: every conservative-leaning figure/body is actively abandoning their stated purpose to align with Trump.
Lemme just say if President Bernie Sanders had unilaterally imposed, by executive fiat, hundreds of billions of new taxes, personally browbeat executives about job cuts and investments and then fired the head of BLS, the Chamber of Commerce and the business orgs would not be sitting idly by.
one thing that keeps happening is Trump taking major steps which impose large, often asymmetric costs on American business, and American business doing fucking nothing in response

How did the pandemic start?

I have avoided publicly commenting on this for 5 years. Here's my take as someone who has no stake at all in the game.

Democratic voters: we want a party with a spine.

Democratic strategists: hear me out. What if, instead of a spine, we turned into basically an LLM generated platform where our prompt was just polling results?
EXCLUSIVE: A top Democratic strategist has launched new policy research and messaging hub, called Searchlight, with a goal of pushing the party toward the most effective, broadly popular positions.
Dems are quietly forming a think tank to help them win again
Searchlight, a name inspired by the birthplace of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, comes at a precarious moment for a Democratic Party.

To me Rowling exists entirely outside of the “should we support/work with artists with troubling views?” debate. She doesn’t just *think* her opinions, she doesn’t just *say* them, she’s a relentless 24-7 activist whose whole mission in life is terrorizing trans people.
there's also people claiming we trans people are "holding allies to a purity test" here and to be clear:

"Don't participate in stuff that actively funds the campaign to exterminate us" is a pretty fucking low bar. One might say it's not even "allyship," it's just decency.
Also, Lithgow is trying to muddy the waters by giving interviews where he pretends that the controversy here is that he's American, not that he's signing off on transphobia.

"You should be praising me for being able to admit that—well, not that I was wrong, heaven forbid—but perhaps my faith in the mayor who was arrested thirty-four times for arson was misplaced."
Voting for the Mayor Who Promised to Blow Up the City Doesn’t Mean I Approve of the Mayor Blowing Up the City
It’s so easy to label people these days. From the way folks have been talking, you’d think everyone falls into two buckets: those who voted against...

This brought back many memories of delivering papers :) Though we (brother and I) had someone drive us on sundays, carrying even half the route was basically impossible.

Also fun: *packing* the Sunday papers, which arrived in separate stacks, and you had to assemble before delivery.
A dry Christmas tree can burn faster than newspaper. *

*Before the internet, you were able to receive a collection of news articles printed on paper. These papers were delivered to your door either by professionals or kids on bikes struggling to balance while carrying the Sunday edition.
