Jack was waiting when they’d gotten back from mission debrief. Sat against one of the walls, arms crossed and mouth tight. And the moment he saw them together- Steve just a half-pace behind Brock.. His eyes darkened. Back already? Brock though, anticipation swelling in his chest. Good. “Captain,” Jack said. Cool, neutral. Steve offered a polite nod. “Rollins.” Brock didn’t say a word, just let the tension hang as they passed. And, sure enough, Rollins’ voice followed them down the hallway like a shadow. “Already trailin’ after him, huh?” He muttered. “Didn’t take long for the uniform to start creasin’ at the knees.” Steve stopped. Brock kept walking. He counted to three. Four.. Five-- Then turned. Steve was still standing there, back straight, shoulders square. Not moving towards Jack, but not starting to move away, either. “You say somethin’?” Brock called, voice flat. Jack smiled. That knife’s-edge sneer that never meant anything good. “Didn’t realize Captain America needed a goddamn babysitter,” He drawled, locking onto Steve. “Guess losin’ your boyfriend in the snow made you stupid.” Steve turned, sharp. Brock stepped between them just as Steve’s hands balled into fists. “s’enough.” He said, low. “Back off.” Jack’s gaze slid to his. “Touchy.” “Get out’a his face, Jack.” And then, just to sell it, he softened his tone. “He ain’t yours to push around.” Later, Steve wouldn’t say much. Not about Jack. Not about anything.

The first time he saw him, Steve was sat at the edge of a steel bench in some SHIELD safehouse, back bowed like he’d been carrying the weight of something for far too long. His knuckles were white around a ceramic mug of long-cold tea someone had shoved into his hands a half-hour ago. He hadn’t taken a single sip. Captain America. He was smaller, Brock thought, than the stories made him out to be. Not physically, no, the serum saw to that. But in presence, yeah. There was something raw and unfinished that clung to him like frost that hadn’t quite begun to thaw. Caught between wars, between centuries and between grief he hasn’t even begun to recognize. Brock filed that away, along with the way Steve stiffened when someone came up behind him. How his eyes tracked every exit. The way he kept leaning to his left, like he was reaching for someone that wasn’t there anymore. Security detail, they told him. Observation only. But what they really meant was: Get close. Make him trust you. Make him stay. And Brock Rumlow was really, really good at lying.

Found this on the AO3 subreddit, and I'm about to let it change my whole life (or at least work really hard to internalize it wrt my writing).
Someone's screenshot of a two-post twitter thread, from user blue (@bluewmist): the fastest way to kill motivation is to make your identity depend on the outcome. it's called ego involvement. when failing becomes failing as a person, your brain starts avoiding the whole thing. not because you don't care, but because you care too much. you don't need lower standards. you need less self-worth tangled up in your goals. the work gets easier when it's not about proving who you are.

Tumblr post by Nix-sacrificium : First post reads: Stevecest but it’s Hydra!STRIKE Commander Steve x a freshly thawed out of the ice that-universe’s Steve Second post, a reblog by the same person, reads : Something something *kill your weaker self* but in reality C!Steve's gotta make a ***Point*** and be the first one of STRIKE to break in the *new kid.* His only saving grace is that nobody knows Commander!Steve is *Steve* - The other is that C!Steve knows himself better than anyone. Can rough the other one just enough, break him down just enough to keep Brock + Co. from getting their hands on in him. Be that buffer between what he went through re : Rumlow and [ Shieldbones ] and all that, so this Steve won't have to experience any of what he went through. ( Which leads into Commander!Steve getting into this weird little situationship with a younger version of himself which is a concept, but one I will leave alone :3 ) And the thought of telling this world's Steve what's up doesn't even fucking cross his mind because that means he'll also be gunning for Bucky. And he can't have that, can he?
