My theory on this is because this COULD become a trigger moment for a severe tightening of political freedoms in US, think Reichstag Fire.
It is not the significance of the event itself but how it is then used by malevolent actors. Be alert, not afraid!
Great thread. I’ve been wondering why this has been all over Austrian news, where most people have probably never even heard of Kirk.
The BBC (& the NYT & the Guardian & NPR) wind up chasing the same dozen stories every day. Charlie Kirk is not important to anyone in England (nor, except for those of us hurt by him, in America). Why have a BBc “news” alert about something the BBc simply cannot report anything new about?

Abolishing the Audit Commission was a Conservative-driven policy

Having run a couple of evacuations in my time, the thing disaster flics miss is the sheer stupidity of people, the « but I haven’t finished watching EastEnders » folks or « I’m not leaving without my 8 pets ». People are idiots!
Mild Superman spoilers below:

.

I've gotta say, mass evacuation scenes like the one in Superman immediately yank away my suspension of disbelief, because the logistics of doing a mass evacuation on that scale in a major city require a way bigger time window than what's ever depicted.

This is such a negative spin on Hegseth’s work in DoD. Sounds like he is in a head-to-head competition with Musk to see who can deliver the “biggest savings”. Literally destroying the DoD should be worth hundreds of billions.
Just so we are clear - despite this guy’s fawning over Donald Trump, this mess is Trump’s making. He appointed the incompetent television host to head the DOD.
