At last week's 1st AVNOJ Fest in Bosnia commemorating socialist Yugoslavia and the anti-Fascist struggle, Jani Novak opened Laibach's performance with an apology to Tito.

Laibach was so publicly critical of the Yugoslav authorities in the 1980s the band was deemed an enemy of the state.

Deliberate confusion in Bulgaria?

Bulgarian social media is awash with notices for more protests this evening. However, Bulgaria's media (concentrated in the hands of "politician" Deyan Peevski) is claiming this protest is "fake" and implying "foreign meddling" is behind it.

“Why spend extra money for 100% quality when you can make the same profit with 60% quality?”

The answer why so many businesses will accept "good enough" over "good"
I wouldn’t say they hate their customers. They just like money more.

To quote an industry exec I met at an event this year, “Why spend extra money for 100% quality when you can make the same profit with 60% quality?”

It’s about the minimum viable product. Of course it is; they’re businesspeople.
The people in charge of these companies hate their customers.

Today is Dan Republike, aka Republic Day, Yugoslavia's national day.

What this usually means nowadays is that ex-Yugoslavs have their social media feeds crammed with others posting the Zabranjeno pušenje song "Dan Republike"

Definitely going to watch this film, especially as it's set in Rijeka, one of my favourite cities.

Fiume o Morte recreates Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio's comical 1919 attempt to annexe Rijeka (Fiume) to Italy.

Now showing in London at the ICA, Ciné Lumière and the Bertha Dochouse

Translation tip:

Some languages put "quotes" for street or building names.

Not English: names in quotes otherwise denote a nickname or it's unofficial.

Small details like these can shift meaning more than you'd think.

Always use the target language's punctuation in translation.

Why is the English name of the university in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria the awkwardly literal "Trakia University" and not the "University of Thrace"?

Because there was already a "University of Thrace" in Greece.

Australia's intelligence agencies spied on post-WWII immigrants from Greece (including my family members).

Not mentioned here but ethnic Macedonians from Greece, many having been with the Communists in the Greek Civil War (1944-49), were most targeted, and denied Australian citizenship for decades.

12 years ago Australian-born Croatian footballer Joe Šimunić got fans to respond to his calls of the Ustasha (Nazi) slogan 'Za dom spremni' (Ready for the homeland) while obscuring a Nazi salute. He claimed he did nothing wrong as "he loves his homeland".

The comments for this clip are wild!
