Happy 50th birthday today to Bulgaria's Sofi Marinova!

Proudly Roma, Sofi won the hearts of Bulgarians with her impressive vocal range, ability to sing in a variety of genres and her frank nature.

Her talent is on great display here with her rendition of the Bulgarian folk song 'Danyova mama'

Deliberate confusion in Bulgaria?

Bulgarian social media is awash with notices for more protests this evening. However, Bulgaria's media (concentrated in the hands of "politician" Deyan Peevski) is claiming this protest is "fake" and implying "foreign meddling" is behind it.

Seeing that 29 November used to be Yugoslavia's national day, here are some pics I took last year of the Tito monument next to the Iron Gate border crossing between Serbia and Romania on the River Danube

The unintentional irony of "hype" here, as in "promotional publicity of an extravagant and contrived kind"

Translation tip:

Some languages put "quotes" for street or building names.

Not English: names in quotes otherwise denote a nickname or it's unofficial.

Small details like these can shift meaning more than you'd think.

Always use the target language's punctuation in translation.

"Black Friday" (complete with English spelling)

Books like these.

Here I am pictured in a bookshop in Sofia, Bulgaria with two books I had a hand in their creation – Kapka Kassabova's Elixir and Anima

When in Sofia, Bulgaria, I always go to Coffee Lab and get a flat white. It still amazes that Australian flat whites are available worldwide, let alone in Bulgaria

Latest term I've discovered is solely Australian (and New Zealand):

Glory box

Granted, it's very dated but a glory box is "a wooden box for woman's clothes and household items stored in preparation for marriage"

My cousin has had a bad day dealing with his chronic renal disease, so to ease the pain, he's got out the bouzouki and giving it a play

Never did I think that exactly 36 years after the fall of Todor Zhivkov and “Communism” in Bulgaria that I'd be spending the day working in the kitchen of my cousin's house just outside of Sofia.

My cousin is currently scouring every pharmacy in Sofia for medication for his chronic renal disease.

"First class" on a train in Bulgaria that remembers Zhivkov 😂

Trust me, the photo looks better than the real thing.

I'm sure that this train meets all EU standards 😁
