I'm fascinated by the evolution from the 90s era of "corporations" being the ultimate progressive boogeyman, to the current reality when corporations like Honda seem stable and responsible compared to the capriciousness and insane agendas of our current tech oligarchy
meanwhile, Honda's over here not going too fast, not breaking too many things and not routinely littering the Gulf of Mexico www.theverge.com/news/689183/...

So Starship Ship 36 just detonated *before* the static fire test - fueled and waiting for the test. Looks like the top tank lets go and sets off the whole stack. It would be bad enough if it let go during the static fire test, but it just blew up. And it's cooking off the fuel tanks on the pad.

I think letting a drug-addled lunatic and his crew of sociopathic incels randomly rip apart government agencies with no oversight may not have been as terrific an idea as it seemed

Pro tip: all major social media companies do this. Twitter, ironically, was one of the only companies that ever pushed back against law enforcement demands for data/unmasking/etc.

Now, well. Here we are.
most terrifying part of this is that facebook gave up their messages to the police

I was born in 1980, raised evangelical, and believe me, they were extreme then. That drove me away, and I’m not unique. You’ve got the causality backwards; sociologists Hout and Fisher (and others since them) have shown that the rise of the nones was driven by the Christian Right’s politics
Interesting but actually unsurprising report since the decline in Christian belief is massive in the past two decades, and a siege mentality kicked in.
“The only way to fight Christian nationalism effectively is to recognize it as authentically Christian. Let’s hope the punditocracy figures that out”

Major flaw of Threads is a basic tenet of a writing-based apps is you need a core user base of… writers. Or people who know how to write. This was key to twitter’s growth: journalists, weird twitter, comedians, people who can provide pith and insight not just Mountain Dew saying ‘new flavor ideas?’
One thing I definitely like about Bluesky vs. Threads is that Bluesky isn't wall-to-wall brand hell

Threads sucks because it rewards Instagram influencers who were able to just import their already large following & the algorithm just promotes the hell out of their high engagement posts

but as everyone is finding out, Instagram influencers just aren’t good posters. they don’t have the sickness.

There was a poll during the Trump years that evangelicals felt they were more discriminated against than Muslims.

This is the core of it in so many ways, a group of people constantly convincing themselves through alternative media that they are victims, justifying all they do to others.
This, in a nutshell, is why DeSantis hyped a video valorizing masculinity and treating LGBTQ people as aberrant.

not the first to point this out by any means but i am still struck how similar trump and musk are even down to all the old tweets resurfacing to bite them in the ass lol
Twitter is threatening legal action against Meta over Threads

in November, Elon Musk mocked laid off Twitter employees, saying “their immense talent will no doubt be of great use elsewhere”

well, apparently some went to Meta to build Threads & Musk now has a problem with that

Max is right. This is a bullshit letter. And since it’s from Alex Spiro, who isn’t an idiot, it’s a deliberate, please-your-psycho-client, needily-posturing stupid letter.

No sense of shame at all.
The letter from Twitter's lawyer to Meta over Threads is comically bad. There's no substance, just a vague claim that Twitter employees Elon fired had some sort of dark magic in their brains about how to make a microblogging service.

there really is something to be written about the terrible lighting in most hollywood blockbusters these days. scenes are either too dim with no discernible source or they are lit for maximum coverage and thus look entirely too flat and artificial
it is interesting and kind of funny that in in a little more than a decade these movies have reached the place the comics took a quarter century to get to: obsession crossovers and byzantine lore at the expense of telling a story people want to read
of the various marvel movie franchises i’m pretty fond of ANT-MAN but i’m having a hard time with this newest one. the CGI effects look terrible
