I'm going to talk a lot about native plants, gardening, and cameo random silliness. Come along for the ride.
Forget watching paint dry. I've spent the past two weeks waiting for the first bloom to open on my native Eastern Red Columbine (aqualegia canadensis). #nature #nativeplants #gardening

This is what a critically endangered Red Wolf looks like. If we work together, we can save them 🐺

Why, yes, I do explore my native garden multiple times a day, every single day. Ohio spiderwort (tradescantia ohiensis), foxglove beardtongue (penstemon digitalis), and holes in a log from overwintering insects. #gardening #nature #nativeplants

Maple trees have flowers, but they're small and easy to miss.

Pin Oak (quercus palustris) has been a favorite of mine before I knew anything about native plants. A small stand surrounded my elementary school, and I'd pocket the tiny acorns for no reason other than they looked cool. They grow quickly, initially taking on a pyramidal shape before becoming 1/

Golden Alexander is one of the first things to bloom in my microprairie. The picture on the left is this year's growth coming up. The one on the right is from last year when it was 2-3 feet tall and in full bloom. #gardening #nativeplants #nature

Had to do a double take to notice the Wild Bergamot coming up. Easily one of my favorites! #gardening #nativeplants #nature

15+ years old, but still VERY relevent — and if we had acted 15 years ago, the “better world” we’d be creating would be a LOT better & easier to reach. There are real consequences we’re just starting to see to not heeding this cartoon a lot sooner. Even worse if we don’t heed it now. #ClimateCrisis

I saw a single plant two days ago. Today, there are a dozen! Pictured is purple coneflower (echinacea purpurea), but the foxglove beardtongue (penstemon digitalis) and wild sunflower (helianthus annus) germinated as well. Spring is near! #gardening #nature #nativeplants #plants

So uh... the one garter snake I adopted yesterday was apparently a snake-napping from this nest. They were adorable and inquisitive, though! #nature #snakes

This garter snake was hanging out on some turf grass. I brought it to the native garden in an attempt to recruit a homie.

Patiently staring at my seeds, wondering why nothing has germinated. Oh... it's still March and just unusually warm in Ohio.

One of my first pictures of the micro prairie. The critter is a Transverse Banded Fly (eristalis transversa), which feeds on nectar and pollen. #nature #nativeplants

Eastern Columbine (aquilegia canadensis). I grew this from seed in the winter of 2023 and planted out in spring of 2024. Excited to see blooms this year! #nature #nativeplants

For International Women's Day, let's pay homage to the great plant anatomist Katherine Esau. In her long career, she transformed our understanding of plant structure through her research and her very important books. She is my academic grandmother, advisor of my advisor.
