Daftness, mostly
Just witnessed the worst racism I’ve ever heard. Men in the pub calling black people monkeys and laughing at people on boats, in particular pregnant women.

I slammed my drink down and called them disgusting. But then not very bravely abruptly left. But I was with my daughter

Yesterday evening I walked with my daughter across the field, passing a man walking his dog. As we got to the part where the path narrows and goes through a small wooded bit, we turned as one to see where the man was. We hadn’t said a thing about the man. These are the things women do

Is it true that Americans quite often eat from paper plates? As in at home, not a big party or anything. But just normally. Is that so?

Among everything else fascinating about the Louvre heist, it's delightful it took place at 9.30am. Most of us, if planning a massive jewel theft, would be setting an alarm for the middle of the night. The French remind us you can have a decent night's sleep and THEN do it.

I always thought that when you die and if you know you’re about to, it’s your own life that you’ll be sad to say goodbye to, but the older I get, I realise it will be your children and realising that you’ll never see them again

My Dad’s 90 next year and hasn’t eaten meat for decades. Unusual for those days. He’s not a massive animal lover but has always thought eating them is barbaric when there are so many other alternatives.

Standing on a train platform talking to two people I’d just met at a conference and we start talking about how it’s different for a man being alone at night in a foreign city.

And then the lady says to the man, “well not for you as I expect you get picked on for your turban”

“No” he says.

What happens to the state pension of people who’ve died before claiming?

I heard something the other day advocating for terminally ill people with a year or so to live, should be able to claim it. They can’t work but still have bills to pay. Absolutely agree.

If only old people’s homes were like the one in the Thursday Murder Club. Trouble is, once people finally have to go in them, really they’re not able to do much more than shuffle about. A handful will play a board game or two, but most are props to make the family feel better
