Him - 3 / 5

Arthur piece masquerading as a horror movie. Visually, this thing is amazing to watch. Story-wise...its a chaotic mess.

A complete mess, but good to look at. Him is an auteur piece masquerading as a horror movie. It’s a looney tunes premise that takes the ‘professional athletics is a form of modern day slavery’ and pil...

I had my political differences with Dick Cheney, but in person I found him warm, funny, a gracious host and surprisingly knowledgeable about music. Seeing The Jesus Lizard with him in 2009 was a blast, and he didn't hesitate to wade into the pit despite a few sidelong glances.

The Surrender ‐ 3.5 / 5
Shudder - 2025

A good movie and very well executed although you have to accept an extremely flawed conceit to get there. The mother is one of the most baffling characters I've seen, and her motivations are completely inscrutable.

Here For Blood - 3.75 / 5
Prime 2022

Well executed deliberately silly horror movie. Not as good as Psycho Goreman, but better than most other attempts at this genre. The elbow drop scene is hysterical and probably what I'll remember forever about this one.

The Ugly Stepsister – 4 / 5
Shudder 2025

Unexpectedly gruesome serving of misery as entertainment a la The Coffee Table and Speak No Evil. Never matches the sustained dread of better films, but the high spots are gnarly. Lea Arden's acting is superlative.

They Call Her Death (Shudder 2024) — 4 / 5

Wild tide that evokes Peter Jackson's early work, Robert Rodriguez and old westerns. The low budget seams do show quite a bit, but it's still quite fun. Definitely niche, but I am in said niche.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024 Max) — 3.5 / 5

A perfectly pleasant viewing experience. Best looking movie I'll see this year likely. And good story! Does have tryhard syndrome. Too many bits reek of a culturally out of touch old man. Could be worse though.

Speak No Evil (2024 US) ‐– 3.5 /5

Surprisingly decent if still inferior to the original in every way. The original goes extremely hard, and this is the low ABV pre-mixed cocktail version for American audiences. Almost every fresh choice backfires.

A strange hybrid of early Del Toro, a depressing doc about human trafficking, and a Victoria’s Secret fashion show shot in a frustrating aspect ratio that takes up <50% the pixels on your screen. Probably better than my score.

Creative concept but has way too many cogs and gears that were assembled with something less than machine-shop caliber precision. Definitely needed more time in the oven. 100% of plot locomotion is driven by characters behaving like morons.
