I'm giving a talk about Women in Volcanology. And I'm so excited!

It's not the talk I thought I would be giving originally. Some really cool historical research I've done has turned up some amazing stories.

Putting the impoverished methodology of the study aside, here's an alternative reading of the data.

UKRI & its component Councils have very poor records re EDI. Evidence of that has mounted over the time in question. Addressing this is A VERY GOOD THING FOR SCIENCE & SCIENTISTS.

Say it out loud.

Good news: 35 countries have decreased their fossil CO2 emissions significantly (p<0.05) while growing their economies in the decade 2015-20244, twice as many as during the previous decade (2005-2014; 18 countries.

These 35 countries account for 27% of global fossil CO2 emissions.

Using corals and models we show regionally amplified acidification, due to the combo of CO2 uptake and remineralisation. This highlights potential risks to productive upwelling zones in an acidifying ocean 🌊🧪⚒️📈

Funders can drive change. Authors can't. Authors are producers, not consumers. Producers don't decide demand, consumers do. Funders and research institutes must demand change of their authors, or withhold their funds. It's that simple. Funders have all the cards.

More fundamentally, every active scientist has been brought up in a system where The Drain was already normalized.

This system hasn't always existed. For-profit publishers are a recent invention. Their value proposition has always been awful, and now they are actively eroding trust in science.
