Jeremy Bowen really is an outstanding broadcaster. He's a reminder that public service broadcasting can be objective and impartial without needing to be balanced - indeed that balance makes objectivity impossible. I imagine they'll get rid of him soon.

Radio 6 is a tribute to all that is best at the BBC. It is inform, educate and entertain in musical form: Utter loveliness. And then they periodically allow the news department to mutilate it with these context-free anti-asylum bulletins, reminding you of all that's worst about the BBC.
Radcliffe and Maconie on BBC 6 music is one of my favourite things

Having it interrupted by breathless news bulletin telling me ‘government has banned taxis for asylum seekers’ *really isn’t*

New lines like ‘Home Office spent £1k over weekend on taxis’ would struggle to make a local newspaper

When did journalism change? When I did my journalism postgrad, we were taught to ensure the opening sentence summarised the key info.

Today's online 'news' writers must've been taught to ‘hide the key info until paragraph 14!' so people must tediously scroll through copious ads

The people behind Brexit are the same politicians now using immigrants as scapegoats to win power and divide our country. They trashed our economy and they’ve trashed our politics - don’t let them do it all over again.

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years as a result of a deliberate strategy. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people.

Good trade.

Tariffs on → Markets crashed → Super-rich buy in.

Tariffs off → Markets rally → Super-rich even richer.

We used to have a word for this: Criminal.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

The UK exports £360bn of goods to the EU, on which we now struggle with big non tariff barriers, compared to £60bn to the US. Imagine looking at this sh1tshow and thinking it vindicates Brexit in any way.

It’s impossible to explain to someone how utterly boring Sunday mornings were for a tween child in the 70s. If your family didn’t go to church and the weather was bad you had a choice of farming programmes (nasal bot treatments anyone), Ed Stewart on the radio or fighting your siblings.

The scenes in the Oval Office today will shame the US for decades. They’ll never be forgotten.

A world leader, fighting for his country against the 21st century’s Nazis, came to the US and was attacked & abused by a gangster regime siding with the fascist invaders.

A historic disgrace.

#OnThisDay in 1982, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that using corporal punishment in UK schools, against parents’ wishes, was not OK.

The practice was subsequently banned, benefitting generations of British children.

Just when you think Donald Trump cannot sink lower or be more shameful, today he's blaming Ukraine for the war and calling Zelinsky a dictator, when he knows perfectly well that Putin's constant re-elections are put-up jobs.

Pretty disturbed by some of the Kremlin framing on the Trump talks being bought by parts of the media worldwide. It’s as if the genesis of the war is entirely forgotten. This isn’t a conflict which needs mediation. It was an unprovoked act of aggression. It could end tomorrow if Putin just withdrew.

This is important & necessary. I’d add only that a) It’s clear many of the political & media figures deliberately ignoring these facts are playing with the sort of fire we saw on our streets this summer & b) Laura Kuenssberg’s failure to point this out to Farage was an appalling dereliction of duty.
Some people in recent days have alleged a ‘cover-up’ over the grooming & rape of hundreds of young girls in predominantly northern UK towns, leading to calls for a ‘national’ public inquiry into child sexual exploitation

FWIW here’s a non-exhaustive list of inquiries into #CSE in last 12 yrs…
