reminded of eric williams's observation about britain's relationship to its history with slavery. "British historians wrote almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it."

Just wilful performative cruelty that is entirely out of step with the majority of British people.

How many Labour MPs got into politics in order to vote for stealing jewellery off of people seeking refuge from war and persecution?

Some good news: Brazil's fight against deforestation is paying climate dividends.
Brazil records biggest annual fall in emissions in 15 years, notably thanks to fight against deforestation
The gross emissions of Latin America's biggest country fell by 16.7% year-on-year, according to Brazil's Climate Observatory, a network of environmental NGOs.

a gargantuan economic development that healthier societies would be well positioned to exploit politically. but we have xenophobia and hyper policing as our de facto climate policy instead of managed fossil fuel phase out. this is not an accident
Solar energy has consistently been underestimated.

Today, it adds more capacity/yr to global grid than any other source in history.

If trend continues, solar will deliver more electricity generation/yr than any technology before it.

An interesting thing is happening around the world. While all the headlines are about how India wants to use more gas, they don't have the infrastructure in place for gas distribution.

While they are figuring out if they can do that, renewables march on.
India’s wind and solar generation has DOUBLED in just five years 🇮🇳⚡

In 2024, 🇮🇳 overtook Germany to become the world’s THIRD-LARGEST generator of electricity from wind and solar.

This is some great analysis by Sam Reynolds at IEEFA. I recommend reading it all or you could just take away the main point:

"This does not bode well for the global LNG industry."
This just in: IEEFA analysis suggests LNG is unlikely to play a major role in displacing coal (or oil) in China. Notes that "volatility in global markets and escalating tensions with suppliers like the U.S. have only weakened the case for LNG in China"; global oversupply incoming.
Understanding the competitive landscape for China’s LNG market
Gas exporters have touted the potential of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to replace coal and reduce emissions in China. China’s LNG demand appears limitless when viewed as a simple substitute for coal. ...
