Hi everyone! I'm a data scientist working with Pivot in southeastern Madagascar. I spend my days exploring data and developing tools to put disease modeling into the hands of local health actors. I'm also interested in critical approaches to these methods (and others) within global health

the most important thing to remember when you see eugenicists who don’t believe that autistic people should exist rambling about “the autism epidemic” is not that they’re wrong about the “cause” (although they are absolutely wrong about it); it’s that they are eugenicists

This post really resonates with me. Trying coding with LLMs in the past few months has *felt* like a 25-50% speed up for me.... but that means I'm just like this author, and just like the average coder in the METR study...
Where's the Shovelware? Why AI Coding Claims Don't Add Up
78% of developers claim AI makes them more productive. 14% say it's a 10x improvement. So where's the flood of new software? Turns out those productivity claims are bullshit.

The fun (?) thing about this besides that it is bullshit, is that pregnant people already have very few choices in pain relief and constant emphasis on potential harms to the fetus leads to fewer and fewer effective pain medications during a time when people's bodies are changing and being stressed.

With O'Neill (apparently) taking over CDC (if they ever get around to firing Monarez), I think it's worth looking back to Project 2025 and asking what they actually intend to *do* to CDC. So, I went to remind myself today. Here's what's in store:

the USA built a system of higher education so good that smart/rich people from across the world came here, spending billions to learn here, subsidizing education for Americans while spending money to live in our cities and towns. our government arbitrarily decided we should stop doing that
The US could see a 30-40% decline in new international student enrollment, resulting in nearly $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer American jobs. https://www.nafsa.org/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact

Very proud of, and sad for, our friends at The Carpentries for turning down #NSF funding. The (illegal) demands that they abandon DEI goals were fundamentally at odds with their values. They made a hard and principled choice.

It’s worth naming that the reason people already have these “neutral” alternative phrases in their back pocket is because this is the language white supremacist scholars use to hide their hateful work.

And now they’re asking all of us to use it to legitimize them.
I was told to change language in a grant proposal to avoid the term "racial segregation" and add in a clause stating that it ("neighborhood disadvantage" was suggested) is "harmful for white people, too."

Mind you, the (non-federal) funder is not demanding these changes.
