The first 24 hours of #Candida2025 have been fantastic. Really appreciate the breadth of focus of the talks and posters encompassing multiple Candida pathogens, not just C. albicans.

The preprint for our super fun collaboration with Erika Shor @mutant-fungus.bsky.social is out. Check it out to see some really beautiful PFGE karyotyping gels from Candida glabrata!

Is this thing still on?

Anyway, we have a new preprint out of a story that's been brewing in my lab for several years and is finally ready to see the light of day. It's about what happens to Candida glabrata while it's hanging out inside macrophages.

Today I learned that, apparently, one way to recognize writing created by AI is to look for em dashes, because AI uses them way more than humans do. This is a problem because this human loves em dashes -- they convey connections between sentence parts like no other punctuation symbol can.

If you're interested in beta-glucan synthase, the target of the echinocandins, check out our new paper, where we describe some cool new aspects of its expression and regulation in Candida glabrata.

Expression of 1,3-β-glucan synthase subunits in Candida glabrata is regulated by the cell cycle and growth conditions and at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels | Antimicrobial Agents...
β-1,3-glucan synthase (GS) is a fungal enzyme essential for cell wall biosynthesis and the target of echinocandins, a frontline antifungal drug class. Given the increasing resistance to azole-class dr...

I've gotten Novavax in both 2023 and 2024 because it didn't give me any side effects (chills, weakness, muscle pains, etc.), unlike the mRNA vaccines. And now I'm not eligible for it. 😕🙄
SCOOP: FDA Approved the Novavax Covid shot, but with a catch: It's for people 12-64 who have an underlying condition.

That will make it harder for many, such as those caring for a sick loved one, to get the jab:

Speaking to friends, I've likened the situation facing US researchers to that of the dinosaurs. We've competed for limited resources. We've adapted to our environment. We've evolved to be successful in the complex and competitive research ecosphere. And then a giant asteroid fell out of the sky.
