In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.
Why?
It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

Comet 3I/ATLAS is back, visible pre-dawn in Virgo.
A Nov. 8 image reveals 4–5 tails, including a jet toward the Sun—unlike recent fuzzy photos. It’s still on its predicted path. Spaceweather.com is asking for confirming shots.

Why is this so beautiful to me?
This breaks some people’s brains.
In most cities, Costco stores fuel sprawl & car dependency.
In Vancouver, our full-sized downtown Costco has residential towers above & a skytrain station next door. LOTS of customers don’t drive to it.
We live a block from it. We call it “the convenience store.”

Came across this story earlier for…reasons. And I was wondering, like you do, if one could do this with a Seestar.
In 1676 Ole Rømer saw eclipses of Jupiter’s moon Io run late when Earth moved away from Jupiter and early when approaching. Earth’s orbital diameter was known from Kepler’s laws; from this he was the first to estimate the speed of light (at 220,000 km/s) and was accurate to 75% #AstroHistory

A CME hit Earth early Nov. 6, sparking a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm. Up to three additional CMEs are expected through Nov. 9. More nights of aurora potential for northern skies!
Even better? Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) is glowing in the sunset sky.

It's nice to have a search tool that tells you what it found and didn't find instead of making stuff up. Especially when what it didn't find is almost as important as what it found in some contexts
I was doing some searching today and it was like "tha homies in tha field ain't looking into helium immiscibility in they models" and I was like, dang its right and recent stuff in an adjacent topic is finding that would most likely be an important thing that would introduce radiative transfer
I think they are using the language model to not only find the topic associations within papers, but also figure out and let you know what is missing from the literature based on what topics it thinks should be associated but aren't present.

It is technically an "AI" tool, but isn't like the type we've become accustomed to lately. It takes a few minutes to return results, it goes heckin' deep. The insights are pretty good to help figure out which papers you should read. They'll even update the search whenever a new paper comes out

Has anyone here tried Undermind? Its a literature search tool like I've never seen before. I yap about it because it's helped me find stuff so specific that I think the only thing it can't find is why kids love the cinnamony taste of cinnamon toast crunch.

Wish I would have recorded it or wrote it down but its probably better that it was a fleeting moment between me and friends. Nevertheless, arthropods should sleep in fear and should never expect to rule the world as they once did before the carboniferous era. Moult in hell arthropods. Moult in hell.
