extremely clever, artful and well-crafted execution of an objectively-hideous animation aesthetic

I think it's probably less of a big deal than people would imagine. Conservatives tried to make a big deal out of animal welfare rules here in California that would supposedly make chicken, eggs and pork more expensive but it turned out no one cared

It's a level of craft from everyone involved that's staggering to contemplate. The result is stunning and hypnotic bsky.app/profile/eckw...
Real human actor doing real human acting in a movie shot on film in which an actual physically built castle is engulfed in raging flames and the actor who can actually act makes all around him, friend and foe, cower in awe and fear, without saying a word. Try that bullshit AI. Ran will eat you alive

Def felt like he was older than he was because he was aged up so much in RAN. Hidetora feels like he's like 90 by the end of the film (even though it's a role that requires a surprising amount of athleticism - I'm not sure a genuinely old guy could do it) bsky.app/profile/doct...
Legit one of the best to ever do it, and his filmography is just one big “must see” list. It somehow felt like Nakadai would live forever

Are we 100% sure EG isn't JCO? Never seen em in the same place

A really great movie I feel like a lot of Westerners have trouble appreciating because it assumes a level of familiarity with famous events in Japanese history a foreign audience is unlikely to have. I didn't really vibe with it until after I listened to the Criterion commentary

Also the look on his face during this incredible insert of him having just shot an arrow into someone's back from off-screen

So much you can say about his legendary performance in RAN but one thing I'll always think of is how he managed to nail his performance in one of the riskiest shots in film history - a huge character moment as he walks away from the castle set that they are literally burning down behind him

As much as YOJIMBO and SANJURO are showcases for Toshiro Mifune's charisma, they don't really work without a titan on the other side of the story, and it's hard to think of other actors who could've matched Mifune' energy the way Nakadai did.

Dismantling ACA isn’t about punishing insurance cos. The subsidies Dems were haggling for are tax credits. That’s our money. Not theirs. They’re talking about health savings as pre-tax dollars like your 401k. This is deregulation. Letting insurance cos resume denying coverage and selling junk plans.
