NIH saves lives. And the Trump Administration has been illegally trying to stop it from doing so. This finding makes it all the more clear: the Admin needs to release these funds NOW so that NIH can continue its critical work.

the problem with "have foundations fund science" is that the federal government was willing to fund anyone. foundations fund a VERY few people at a very high level for a very long time.

not one foundation in my field had a major open call for research in 2025. zero new grantees.
It's incredibly distressing, because - my lab needs funding but look, realistically, I'll be okay - but the entire generation of people who were going to move into this research space are just completely orphaned. There's no way to start a lab on this now. Funders need to pivot back to funding.

Outrageous. The White House is sidestepping Congress and halting up to $15 billion in NIH research funding, which would have gone to study diabetes, cancer & more.

The order was issued through a four-sentence email sent to NIH directors from Office of Management & Budget Director Russell Vought.

Russell Vought has unilaterally decided today that he simply won’t allow anyone outside of NIH to receive research funding.

$15 billion in NIH funding is now locked down. If not reversed, it will also take down many Universities in the United States.

Forget new cancer treatments or vaccines.

Interesting you say we need to speed up drug approvals. FDA approves most drugs faster than other countries. We review drugs for serious conditions w/i 6 months. Speeding drug development is important + rolling review makes sense. But careful review takes time - and resources, which have been cut.
