It’s a mistake the public makes to think that young people don’t do the work because it’s to hard. It isn’t that students don’t want to do difficult things. They do.

I have 9th graders doing incredibly difficult scientific thinking and writing. But not all of them and not most of them.

Happy National Unsubscribe Day to all who practice.

If a business is going to send you an email, they are probably sending you one today. So rather than delete the email, unsubscribe, and keep your inbox clean going forward.

Last year I bought a seasoning injector for making our turkey. This year I used it to add extra caramel to the middle of my apple pie mid bake.

My husband thinks I’m crazy. I think it was ingenious.

As a Seahawks fan that moved to the Bay Area I’m just loving this start for Brock Purdy.

Made my famous “Clarey Cake”, so named because I created it for my friend Clarey’s birthday well over a decade ago.

Chocolate cake with cookie butter icing.

Getting really tired of calling my senators and yet here we are once again…and I live in California.

My ninth graders voted for Sour Patch and Twix. Unexpectedly, they expressed a lot of enthusiasm for water. It’s our first Halloween at this address and I hope we get a lot of kids of all ages.

I don’t really care about baseball. But I’m obsessed with the fact that this guy “caught” number 61 and promptly took off the shirt to reveal he was wearing a “Dump 62 Here” shirt underneath.
M's fan... in Detroit... just caught #61 from Cal Raleigh... while wearing a shirt that reads "DUMP 61 HERE".

It's a sign. 😳

As Cal said: might as well go win the whole fuckin thing.

I spent way too many hours in the last week making these coloring sheets for my students but I’m very happy with how they turned out.

My mentee in undergrad has a 3.9 GPA in biology and wants to do her PhD at Stanford in the microbiology department. She found her dream lab. Can my community help us? She's so talented and I really want this for her! She has accomplished so much against all odds. Please share.

Is Ted Cruz really trying to body shame JB Pritzker? Wow, men giving men the same stupid treatment they have been giving women for decades. Someone needs to stand in front of Cruz with a mirror.
Ted Cruz: "I don't want to get between JB Pritzker and the Dominos Pizza line, but I'll tell you what I am willing to get between -- him and his open doors for every human trafficker ... "

This behavior would get you expelled from my school. Apparently the House needs the same behavior policies that we have for literal teenagers.
Democrats are moving to censure a Republican lawmaker after he took a photo of a Dem colleague on the House floor and shared it with colleagues, where she was mocked and likened to a stripper. CPR first reported the existence of the group chat and photo-sharing: www.denverpost.com/2025/08/21/c...

Colorado’s House Democrats will move to censure the chamber’s third-ranking Republican after he shared a photo of a Democratic legislator in a private group chat.

At 26 I had been paying all my own bills for more than 8 years. I had a masters degree and was married. We were financially supporting my in-laws. I had moved across the country with my spouse and was in my fourth year of teaching middle school. I was a whole ass adult.
"What were you doing when you were 26?" *chuckles*

This is meant to be a fun quip, but it really, REALLY says "too young, right? still just a kid, right? probably naive, right?" It's part of broad unconscious bias toward the gerontocracy.
Establishment figures want to downplay progressive candidates, even though we're the ones providing real solutions.

If we want to move forward as a country, we need to prioritize people over big money and corporations. That's what I'm trying to do:

I paint occasionally, only for my own enjoyment. I’ve been painting animals for my nieces, the last of whom was born 7 months ago so I am a bit behind but I hadn’t had the inspiration to paint.

Last night I painted this little guy and it was such a joy to just fall into painting again.

The problem is an issue of process vs product. Learning occurs during the process portion of writing the essay but often we only value the final product.

AI can create the product but it can’t engage in the process. We can stop this discourse when we figure out how to value the process.
I gotta say I find a lot of AI discourse around higher ed very confusing. "if ChatGPT can write your essays is college even worth it?" did people think math teachers were assigning problem sets because *they* couldn't figure out the answers?

Covid shutdowns made many people realize they could do their jobs from home and to this day businesses are finding it challenging to get people back in the office 5 days a week.

Even people who were not working at the time now have the expectation that some parts of work can be work from home.

1/
We were asked what out biggest challenge was this year and a teacher said teaching kids whose middle school years were affected by covid school closures. I was like, if 5 years of "normal" didn't fix that, what will?
There's supposed to be an AMA today on Reddit with an author of a book about school closures due to COVID and I don't think it's going to go the way the author expects.

Last year, I shared a gofundme for one of our students that made it to nationals for the National History Day competition. This year, his younger brother is going. Our first junior high student to make it to Nationals! There is no funding for travel and registration. Please help!

My school collects student evaluations on a rotating basis and this semester it was my turn.

Student have the option to write in gratitude at the end of the survey.

Reading their gratitude has just made my day.

Are there any scientists here who are researching CbtA toxin, FtsZ, or MreB, or who are using E. Coli as a model organism and who would be willing to email with one of my students?

Please share. 🧬

The librarians at my school ask faculty what they are reading each month and then we get a placard with the book cover on our classroom/office doors.

A student told another teacher that my reading list is “unhinged.”

Sweetheart, that’s only the one book a month I report reading…
