When I was working with DV victims in crisis situations where I had to get them and their kids to a safe place or else I had to take their kids to foster care, the most effective question I asked was, "Would he keep doing that if the cops were watching?"

This is it right here. Law enforcement personnel who move 0 to 60 with their aggression when "executing detention orders" are doing so from learned behavior - it is not instinctual to smash a car window, cut someone's seat belt, drag them out of their car and throw them to the ground. It's taught.

My least favorite phrase to hear people bandy when any conflict emerges is "they're people too." As if personhood has ever stopped someone from being a monster. As if acknowledging the personhood of others has ever protected you from their actions. People do terrible things to people even knowing.
