THE SMOKE RING (1988)
Acrylic - 32" x 48"

I was already fascinated with Larry Niven's free-fall environment, and then in this book I was especially taken with his descriptions of life in and around the "Clump." 1/7
An abstract environment of blue sky crossed by a defuse line of pale yellow light radiating between two distant suns to form a tilted false horizon. In the immediate foreground right, a man extends out from a spherical puffball of plant matter to grab at a woman with swim flippers floating gravity free. She is costumed in a yellow sleeveless top with plunging neckline that is cinched at the waist. Her lavender pants are similarly light fabric, and she wears something akin to webbed swim flippers on her feet. The movement and light evokes and under the sea feeling, but there is no water.

Unlike the painting I did for the cover of The Integral Trees this one encompasses both suns within its field of view though they are somewhat obscured by haze or Clump material. 6/7

It's #ArtAdventCalendar day 15: say hi to the blue bobcat, an extremely unusual color variant - only one has been recorded in the last 100 years. Despite the name they are not blue/Maltese, as they have black markings and paws. The exact genetics behind how this happens aren't known.

Frankie update

Had his second checkup today, got his painkiller patch off and he's flying solo now

He's fussed with the surgery site and the donut rubbed it raw past 2 days. He's in a new cone for now and hates it 😭 1 week to get it healing better!

Stitches out next monday!!

Rough stone steps wind around the side of a hill defining the cliff's edge in their slow ascent. As the path turns sharply, the eroded ground beneath forms an overhang. The sky beyond is suffused with golden radiance layered with grey-blue clouds. The trees at the edge of the cliff, already in the transition to autumn, are lit by the warm glow of sunset creating a contrast of light and shadow up thick textured trunks. Out over the edge, hovering in the open air, a woman in a long dress holds her hands out as if presenting a clear spherical vessel containing a solitary flame. Bathed in the light of sunset, she stares off panel into the far distance while a pair of doves flies low, sweeping over the curving steps.
