Dem leadership played a strong hand in the government shutdown fight about as weakly as possible. (I know because I was backseat driving the whole way.) But Republicans cobbling together majorities to legislate on their own really does (or should) change our expectations as good-faith critics.

In the vacuum, Republicans got their act together and backed Democrats into a corner. Dems now enter a government shutdown fight unprepared.
