So my very good friend Emily Seaweed-Crisps is gonna have a MASSIVE court case on her hands because some CLOWN out there has set up a snack company using her own name! This is preposterous and of course she will win the case hands down, they don't have a leg to stand on! Honestly some people...

Some N. CA locations. According to NWS Eureka, max wave heights were 1.2 ft in Humboldt Bay and 3.6 ft in Crescent City. Point Arena looks like it also saw waves around 3 ft.
July 30, 2025 at 4:45 PM
Tide will be ~2.5 ft here, so water should be around high tide levels.

The first waves are forecasted to arrive at the following locations and specified times.

* California
Fort Bragg 2350 PDT Jul 29 9 hrs 0.8- 1.4 ft
Crescent City 2350 PDT Jul 29 36 hrs 2.9- 5.4 ft

Marine chemical ecology and kelp! Very cool!

Small so called turf algae use chemical "defense" to maintain dominance and prevent the larger kelp to establish. Goes to my reading pile and teaching material.
Kelp forests on the coast of Maine are in decline owing to rapid ocean warming and are being replaced by turf algae, which alter the ecosystem’s chemistry, hindering the recovery of kelp forests.

With sadness and respect, we honor the legacy of Dr. Jim Estes, who passed away this week. A pioneer of marine ecology, Jim’s groundbreaking work transformed our understanding of ecosystems and the essential role of keystone predators like sea otters. He is an icon in sea otter research. 🧵👇

My phone range at 5:20 this morning - it said possible spam and went to voicemail. It was a textbook rep. 🙄

Instead of an apology for a pre-sunrise call, there was some spiel about not having time to fit calls to CA in later in the day. Even 8:20 am would be too early for that.

It's also notable that in a year when NSF made only 1,000 GRF awards nationwide, none of them appear to have gone to current students at any campus of the CSU, the nation's largest four-year university system; just nine current CSU students got Honorable Mentions

I tried to put together an honest assessment of why we even care about weather balloons in a satellite world and why these cuts probably won't be noticed by the public 90% of the time. But the 10% of the time? That's a very, very, very big and concerning 10%.

The current administration is straight up censoring the scientific record by requiring authors to alter an already-accepted research paper because it uses banned words such as "gender" and "equitable" and presents data broken down by sexual orientation.
We were asked to change language and delete data from a paper that already been through peer review successfully - "in order to comply with the Executive Order."

This is from the official journal of the US Surgeon General and the US Public Health Service.

Resisting Attacks on Science - Center for Critical Public Health
So it happened. We have officially withdrawn a paper accepted for publication in a scientific journal because of editorial requests to remove language deemed out of compliance with executive orders.
