What’s coming is chaos, confusion, and, make no mistake, attacks on every issue you care about all at once. That’s the strategy — mass mayhem and distraction. Don’t let it work. Define your sphere of influence: where you can have an impact, work on that, strengthen and build relationships.

I was at a job in 2016 with models quite reliant on emission data from the EPA. And yes our team started downloading everything immediately. Start archiving shit now, seriously!
During trump 1.0, we had to pull down all of the climate change pages off the EPA website. Start archiving shit now, document, backup, photograph, whatever you need to do.

As OpenAI and Meta introduce LLM-driven searchbots, I'd like to once again remind people that neither LLMs nor chatbots are good technology for information access.

A choice has been made here, to comfort white nationalists instead of EVERYBODY ELSE. Just on a sheer numbers level, this is stupid; the bigots are a loud minority, but a minority. They just made the majority of the country "feel confronted," to please a handful.
The National Archives are pivoting heavily into open white supremacy. Stuff like this has been happening at an increased clip for several years now. The fascism is baked into our institutions. We need to recognize that.

They argue that ‘Visitors shouldn't feel confronted’. This is pure erasure.

One way you know that the “stop it, you’re overreacting with the fascism & democratic backsliding hysteria” is deeply unserious & wrong is that weird, sweeping coalitions like this do not emerge under “normal politics” scenarios.
It’s a very big and very weird tent, but I’ll take it: LeBron James, Bad Bunny, The Economist, The Financial Times, The New York Times, Liz and Dick Cheney and Angela Davis endorse Kamala Harris.
Joining the Financial Times, The Economist says: “A second Trump term comes with unacceptable risks.
If The Economist had a vote, we would cast it for Kamala Harris.”

Racist rally? Not a big deal, barely makes the front page. Biden misspeaking condemning that racism? Front page, above the fold, big font. That’s a judgement call about what they think is important and what they think isn’t.

A fact that's lived rent-free in my head since I wrote this piece in 2021 is during a smallpox outbreak from 1898-1903, some people BURNED THEIR ARMS WITH ACID to mimic smallpox vaccine scars to get around vax mandates

People burned themselves with acid rather than protect themselves from smallpox

This is a really good litany of scenarios that are very worth contemplating ahead of time, no matter what the outcome of the election is, because thinking through what you will do in a situation where your ethics are on the line is a very good thought exercise that helps to break the inaction bias.
