This was my approach when trying to get oral interviews with segregationists for my first book.

“I’m writing about you and I’d love to get your input, but I’m writing about you either way.”
You do everything in your power to get every relevant voice in a story. But as one of my former colleagues told a local official who thought his silence would kill a piece: “I’d like to have you. But the story is being written with or without you.”
Reporter: We have 3 videos, 2 breathalyzers, 4 bartenders, and a minivan full of nuns attesting to how the driver was drunk and reckless when he hit the school bus.

Weiss; What did the driver say.

Reporter: He and his lawyer won’t talk. We asked them 5 times.

Weiss: I’m killing your story.

This is Bari Weiss in stonewalling, chin-out, "I won't let the haters get to me" mode. Whether she gets away with it will be determined by whether Sharyn Alfonsi's colleagues at 60 Minutes and CBS News decide to fight back. Pelley, Stahl, Cooper--this decision goes on everyone's permanent record.

For all the blame being thrown around about who “radicalized” Robinson, isn’t this ultimately an indictment on the GOP poster-worthy parenting — conservative, nuclear family, gun-loving, religious — that apparently completely ignored that their kid was in an Internet rathole for most of his days?

Meanwhile, we had another shooting the same day that killed *two* people and in this case it's absolutely clear the crime came from the far right.

Really weird to hear all these demands for retribution against the left when they're 0-for-2 in inspiring these events.

We pay more attention to SCOTUS but this decision, especially if they uphold it, and even though it's ostensibly on a mere abstruse statutory technicality, might be the most radically anti-constitutional ruling of the Trump era. Judicial sanction for dictatorship, for Charles I style personal rule.
1/ The court’s decision was 2-1, with Judges Karen Henderson and Gregory Katsas in the majority and Judge Florence Pan dissenting. As Judge Pan notes in dissent, they reframed the issues argued by the government in order to rule in its favor open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...
