It's increasingly common to see a justifiable worry that AI data centers will raise electricity prices for ordinary consumers. What should we do about that?

There's a lot of remedies, but one overarching solution is to build more wind, solar, and batteries. Why? I am so glad you asked. 1/5

To understand what triggered the protests and the unexpected reaction in Ukraine, it’s essential to know the context - especially for those who don’t follow Ukraine’s internal politics.

🧵Thread:

1/ First, the protest isn’t aimed at the President personally, but at a specific law passed yesterday.

Part of me has been feeling the time is approaching for a reckoning with the implicit solarmaxxing of both much of the Abundance movement *and* its critics.

The next 10 yrs is when these political groups must grapple deeply with the grid and power markets. 🧵
Certainly agree there’s ample untapped room in most regions to get to the first ~30% of electricity from solar. Appreciate Brian Potter's big caveats that his analysis didn’t cover transmission/distrib or power markets—indeed 2 key factors.

My thoughts:🧵

Remember when pan-Africans cry wolf about Europe and go to Moscow for a paycheck - this is what they defend and cheer for. To a chagrin of the Fulanis and the Tuaregs. But with the way things are going, Russians will massacre every single ethnicity in Mali.

We’re entering the biggest era of electricity demand growth since WWII—150 GW of new load in just 5 years.

That means it’s time to treat VPPs and DERs like the core infrastructure they are, not side projects.

Excellent thread

Some of the nuanced (yet obvious) recommendations seem optimistic in the current climate?
14 years ago, while working at CENTCOM, I was asked to do a comparative analysis of the British failure at the Dardanelles to a potential Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

While my discussion of Iran’s capabilities is now outdated, the lessons I identified are still quite relevant (🧵) 1/n
BREAKING: Iran’s Parliament approves the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Decision needs ratified by Iran’s Security Council.

It would trap 20% of the world’s oil supply and send a catastrophic shock through the global economy.

Sometimes my impression is that "normies" believe that our out of control construction costs are the result of some gross malpractice or, worse, blatant stealing by a few bad actors, so we can just get rid of those and, bam!, we get cheaper infrastructure!

Unfortunately, that's not how it works.

Since this part of history isn't that widely known:

At the outbreak of WW2, the Norwegian merchant fleet was the 4th largest in the world, including 19% of the world's tanker tonnage, with overall a high share of new and modern ships.
Not everyone experienced the elation of liberation.

Crewmen of the Norwegian merchant fleet, our most important contribution to Allied victory, trickled home long after the parties, to a country that didn't understand nor recognize their sacrifices until too many decades later.
