I think some folks across the ocean actually don't really get how fucking pervasive romaphobia is. They've picked up on it enough to start making memes about it, but they genuinely have no idea, like. It /cuts through/ and /overrides/ normal sociopolitical views.
this is a pan-european problem sadly. my granny is on most questions of race and ethnicity significantly to the left of the average lithuanian, but if you say the word "roma" in her vicinity she will immediately start talking about how a roma lady tricked my mum into giving away her wedding ring.
