It rustles my jimmies that Trader Joe’s stocks an equal amount of fluoride and fluoride-free toothpaste, as if they’re two different flavors but otherwise equivalent. Presenting fluoride-free as a fun new flavor to try will cause plenty of avoidable cavities for their customers :(

So love wobbegongs. Everything is good about the wobbegong. Its name. Its flattened Oscar the Grouch face. Its frondy bits. Its lazy life as a hungry rug. And it’s a shark. Outstanding animal 10/10
The Tasselled Wobbegong is a master of disguise that can eat a fish almost as big as itself in one gulp. It's classified as a shark, but when it lays on the sea floor it looks like a harmless rug if you manage to see it. But with powerful jaws and sharp teeth they are no fish to mess with.

Proud to have rejected Columbia twice! (Got accepted for undergrad and then grad school, turned both down).

Those stipulations genuinely are very concerning and I do still care about Columbia’s integrity inasmuch as I care about the Ivy League as a whole. Our cultural bulwarks still matter.
Columbia University has handed over its undergraduate admissions process to Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, who will now decide at their sole discretion whether the university has admitted enough white people. It's no longer an independent institution.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Great article!
ICYMI, I sat down with Marie-Philip Poulin this week in Vancouver to revisit her 2010 golden goal and career spent rising to the occasion.

“I’m always going to train hard and get that extra rep, just to make sure that when it’s time, I’ll be ready.”

Fifteen years after first ‘golden goal,’ Marie-Philip Poulin returns to the place her legend began
A teenaged Poulin burst onto the women's hockey scene at the 2010 Olympics. Back in Vancouver, she reflects on her start — and what's next.

That really is quite the headline, from the pretty right-wing Wall Street Journal.

Starting off the year of the snake by spotting this venomous nocturnal snake in Monteverde, Costa Rica. This is a side-striped palm-pit viper. It is poised to attack once it sees suitable prey. You can see that it has lost part of its tail in a previous encounter.

To ensure cars didn’t just take back control of Paris streets as the pandemic was “ending,” (like they have in so many cities), Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social made sure that 60k parking spaces and many streets were permanently transformed with seating for restaurants, people places and bike-lanes.

megawealth is a curse! you become acutely aware of the needs you have that cannot be satisfied through material means AND you are socially ill-positioned to be in a place where you can experience authentic human connection because everyone around you has every incentive to lie to you!
it is *wild* how a primary effect of unspendable wealth can be making someone incomprehensibly thin-skinned

not sure if some people understand that part of what makes creating so rewarding is the fact that it *is* hard. It doesn’t matter if you’re been painting or writing for 80 years— every piece will have problems that need solving, and few things feel better than figuring it out.

i feel like no one taught a lot of these kids about per unit cost? like, even if i buy the most expensive ingredients, the per unit cost of making chocolate chip cookies at home is still cheaper than buying them from a bakery.
as someone on the zoomer/millennial boundary i feel there's a legit problem with people not knowing how to purchase groceries
