"He believed that he must, that he could and would recover the good things, the happy things, the easy tranquil things of life. He had made mistakes, but he could overlook these. He had been a fool, but that could be forgiven….Recovery was possible.”
@lageneralista.ca is usually right (except when it comes to judging the quality of a horror movie).
When I was in undergrad (Russian), my uni thought to close some language programs including mine. I was interviewed and argued the need to know a language to study a country’s culture, history and politics. They kept mine open for a while. Knowing a language is like a key - AI can’t unlock that.
You might have heard that the University of Nottingham plans to suspend all languages courses. This is very disappointing and heartbreaking.

Here you can find their petition aimed at protecting Modern Languages at Nottingham. You can show your support by signing it.

We watched — and enjoyed — del Toro’s “Frankenstein” last night. But I’m not sure that it does enough to justify a runtime longer than James Whale’s 1931 adaptation and sequel combined.

Another oppressively gray and rainy day, and another melancholy soundtrack to accompany it.

I’m slowly parsing my way through Stephen Greenblatt’s new book on Christopher Marlowe, and it’s making me wish someone would do a deep study on the relationship between literature and spycraft.

Yes, I’m sure it’s right up there with a Lafite-Rothschild.

Wait a second — Kash Patel’s girlfriend lives in Tennessee? How is he able to go visit her with the frequency that a serious relationship requires? Does he have a means of traveling there?

I’d say that we need to take Ross Douthat’s opinions less seriously, but then again, I don’t know a soul — left or right — who gives them a single thought.
I was taught growing up that decent people don’t cope in public like this but I guess it’s a different era

Oz Perkins is easily the most interesting and skilled director currently working in the horror genre, and I absolutely cannot wait to see this.

I want to make sure people understand what a big deal this statement is: the FBIAA is only effective inasmuch as it preserves access to and a relationship with the Director. If it is articulating these concerns this forcefully, explicitly referencing Patel, things are much worse than people realize.
FBI agents rip Kash Patels' firings: "erratic and arbitrary retribution"
The agents association urged Patel to "deal in facts," in line with industry standards.

You know, I’m aware this isn’t the most important point, but based on the photos, the officer appears to have been wearing a plate carrier. I’m pretty sure he didn’t feel the impact or its explosion.

(But in fairness, they are difficult to clean; I mean, you can’t just drop it off at the laundry.)
The officer Sandwich Guy is charged with assaulting testifies that he could feel the impact of the sandwich through his ballistic vest, and it “exploded all over my uniform.” He says he could “smell the onions and the mustard.”

I know that there is going to be a lot of criticism and vitriol directed at Cheney today — particularly on this site — but we should endeavor to recognize when those with whom we disagree, however vehemently, stand up and do the right thing. We won’t defeat authoritarianism if we can’t do that.

Just so I'm clear, is one of the benefits of becoming a “Special Attorney” access to a time machine? Will it allow Halligan to ameliorate the fact that her initial presentment was — in all likelihood — not legally valid based on her irregular appointment?

Tim and I discuss CBS's editing of Trump on 60 minutes, Trump's corrumption, how opposing Trump can united Dems of left and center, and why 2026 will be a referendum on Trump.

Plus: Tim's shocking ignorance about the 1948 movie classic, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

It’s just a shame that his compatriot Andre Gregory’s appearances on The OC were left on the cutting room floor.
Wally Shawn! From My Dinner with Andre to Clueless to Gossip Girl to playwriting, he's done it all.
On the other site, an 18-year-old Zohran canvasser described the legendary Wallace Shawn as "the actor who plays Dr. Sturgis on Young Sheldon" which is honestly adorable

This is the area in which I grew up, and to see this sort of thuggish authoritarianism afflicting a community which I know to be decent and caring is more heartbreaking than I can articulate.
This is some disturbing ICE Gestapo footage. They point guns at citizens and threaten to shoot them. They punch a guy in the back of the head repeatedly when he’s down and already subdued, then later slam his head into the side of their vehicle.

This took place on 10/31/2025 in Evanston, IL.

I’m crowd-sourcing a few literary questions:

First, aside from the d’Aulaires’ volume, which we already have, can anyone recommend a treatment of ancient Greek mythology appropriate for small kids? How about any other foundational texts in the canon?
