if we want to talk about youth vs experience, by the time I was 33, I had already been in charge of a combined $2.1 billion set of budgets for all postsecondary education in Michigan, and then the deputy executive of the public university coordinating board in Michigan

The (right-wing) American Council of Trustees and Alumni is now weighing in on the Big Ten's deal with venture capital, trying to slow it down and wrest decision-making from the Big Ten board members (university presidents and chancellors)

Key Findings: Exposure to a field-specific faculty sexual misconduct incident decreases degree completion in that field by 3.4 percent four years after the incident. This decline is driven by incidents occurring after 2015, among which we observe a 7 percent decline in in-field degree completion.

FDA on one hand: estradiol is incredibly dangerous! transfeminine people should not be allowed to have it!

The mood is (understandably) horrendous here today. In honor of the Fitz, have a Great Lakes transition timeline or something

Idk, I'm really stretching for this one

In the middle of all the (excellent) memes, my annual point that The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald hits different when you live in Michigan and your grandpa sailed for Inland Steel, and you recall the fear you had as a young girl when a November gale happened on his last run of the season.

There are no good solutions on the bad side of trifecta, and I'm incensed that the shutdown pain won nothing. But when House members are laying out reform plans and building a case for abolishing/weakening the Senate, we have to start pondering what our version of the Parliament Act 1911 will be.
I don't know what the Senate is going to do. But if they do in fact fold in exchange for nothing, they will be living up to past performance. To expect the Senate to carry out the will of the American people is to misunderstand why it was created in the first place.

For those of us who make our livings doing analysis, not seeing that first one coming is a real gut punch to your confidence that you truly know or understand anything
I’m a girl now, the celebrity apprentice guy is a fascist dictator, and space aliens live in grandpa’s closet. All bets are off. I’ve given up on pontificating about how I, in my smarty pants wisdom, know how it’s all going to pan out.

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard.

We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions.

We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

Evergreen post:

There's "transfem Dem appointed to an advisory only Board of Trustees and who wrote a dissertation on constitutional law and norms for higher education governance just a year ago" useless and then there's "Congressional Dem leadership" useless

had a meeting this morning with my former higher ed policy professor and I'm going to guest teach in 2 weeks

think I'm going to split it into halves, one on state governance & policymaking with MI in particular, and the second on my dissertation methods / findings from my interviews with governors

This is totally ancillary, but I still can't believe I have a corner office by the Capitol in this photo

Like, I grew up with our power and water being turned off for unpaid bills and now I have a fancy office on a floor higher than like all but one building in my hometown

In my job, I of course have to play nicely with all four caucuses and smile widely to avoid creating problems for my members.

But I dream of being able to drop a 🔥 line after a victory like the good senator here
