I like to read (a lot) & I live in the woods. Interested in one health, video games, and a better world for all.

I just need a really good book. That’ll fix me.
somehow… I have never heard of this method, and I’m glad my kid didn’t learn to read like this, and I’m mostly just… amazed (derogatory.)

Tomorrow the Bird Nerds and I will travel virtually to Aotearoa and learn more about the Kākāpō.
I'm looking forward to talking about these lovely big flightless parrots. It's a bit incredible/terrible how there are only 237 of them remaining in the world. (but their population was lower. So yey )

I’ve decided I’m going to make a series of zines about elaborate veganizable breakfasts from around the world & they’re just going to be for me.

I can’t help but think of Lowenstein’s The Palestine Laboratory when I see what ICE goons are doing in the USA right now.

Including the blatant and endless lying about what they’re doing, when we can see what they’re doing.

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

Yes, some people's legacies are complicated. For example, Watson. After all, though he was racist, don't forget his other traits. For example, he was also sexist. And also anti-semitic. And a data / idea thief. So let's not forget all the different facets.

James Watson sucked and he can get bent.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

DNA scientist James Watson has a remarkably long history of sexist, racist public comments
“People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty,” he said in 2003. “I think it would be great.”

virtue signalling is good actually
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

Harriette Mackenzie is such a rare athlete: she’s a BC college basketball star, and she is trans. This is the story of her season: an in-game attack, anti-trans hatred, outing herself, a lifetime of trauma, and how she kept going, despite it all. www.thestar.com/sports/baske...
Bullying, basketball and an online firestorm: How B.C. college star Harriette MacKenzie stood up to anti-trans hate — and won
Trans athlete Harriette Mackenzie has been ostracized most of her life. One violent play during a Pac West basketball game pushed her to fight back.

The Marginalian was something I was introduced to buy people on mastodon, and it has always been a pleasure to read.

Everyday something new and interesting to discover.
Marie Curie—the first woman to win a Nobel and still the only scientist to win two Nobels in two different sciences—was born on this day in 1867. Unbeknownst to most, she was also a humanitarian hero who saved myriad lives driving her X-ray ambulances: www.themarginalian.org/2016/12/14/m...
Marie Curie, Ambulance Driver: The Trailblazing Scientist’s Little-Known Humanitarian Heroism and Her Life-Saving Mobile X-Ray Units
How the first woman to win the Nobel Prize and her brilliant teenage daughter set out to mend the ugliness of war with ingenuity and sheer human courage.

Use your senses to ‘learn’ woodland

Not for a minute, sit with your back against a tree for an hour

Become aware of things that weren’t seemingly there before, smells appearing from nowhere, feel leaf & branch debris on your face

I guess I’m going to have to make a vegan Baja blast cheesecake.

It really just sounds like a key lime pie with a little more food colouring (and coconut) to me, so it’s probably not even that challenging in the grand scheme of cheesecake.

Y'all - now you know us photogs are NOT kidding when we say the Northern Pygmy owls are SO SO SMOL!
Meet our newest patient here at the Alaska Raptor Center, a Northern Pygmy Owl named King Owlbert by his rescuers. Owlbert arrived with a drooping wing, making flight difficult. We’ve given him a supportive wing wrap, plenty of tasty mice, and time to heal. #small #owls #adorable
