As my friend @drshepherd2013.bsky.social says, asking why we need a National Weather Service when we have apps and the Weather Channel is like asking why we need potato farmers when we can buy fries at McDonalds.

It's important to yell FUCK YOU! at the AI commercials on youtube. Not because it does anything to stop the AI company, but because it reinforces your internal locus of control, and it's important for us to feel empowered to tell tech companies to get absolutely fucked, you know?

Several government resources about accommodations for people with #LongCOVID have become unavailable in the last week, following purges of government websites under the Trump administration.

Hardly new info, but BSky should know:

Warsaw's water quality is monitored by eight clams with magnets attached to their shells. If contamination in the water causes the clams to close, the magnets trigger an alarm and shut off the city's water supply.
Thank you, little guardian molluscs.

Exciting news! We’re thrilled to announce that tapir Yuna gave birth to a rare and endangered Malayan tapir calf Sunday night. The newborn, covered in distinctive white spots and stripes resembling a fuzzy walking watermelon, is only the second tapir born in our 120-year history.

One of my favorite insects to find when I visit the neotropics is leaf-mimicking katydids from the Pterochrozinae subfamily. Not only they are convincing in their leaf mimicry, but many species like this Cycloptera also reveal beautiful fluorescent patterns in UV light!
