In reality, “this guy deserves to be punched in the face” is a significantly less violent statement than said guy saying, for example, “immigrants are like cockroaches”. The former is an expression of anger, while the latter is a call for genocide.

The thing about neoliberals and tech bros and “civil society” is that they only see violent rhetoric when it comes in the form of “I want to harm this person”, and not when it comes in the form of “pedophilia is fine” or “America is for white people” or “trans people are dangerous”.

this is just true though like guyssssssss it's been like this for years. you can't say the d word. you instead have to say normal things like "i hope you lose your right to healthcare and lose your job in the winter" which are acceptable insults even though they are also basically wishing death. duh

it’s a pretty simple idea that when you have a social network, high profile accounts and journalists should get manual review before suspensions etc and probably just take the post down w/ warning as your first move if it’s clearly a joke
