👀 Apparently, Ross Douthat invited Seth Harp to debate him on Douthat's "Interesting Times" NYT podcast. Harp says that the episode was recorded, Douthat got crushed, and RD/NYT decided not to publish it.

Fair enough, but methinks the far likelier outcome with Starship is "rapid unscheduled disassembly", not a journey to the sun.

Not to be a nerd, but yeeting something into the sun takes an insane amount of delta-v, and hence either a crazy amount of fuel or years of planetary flybys.
Money can buy happiness. If Elon Musk built a rocket and shot himself into the fucking sun that would generate massive happiness.

Kudos to Mayor Mamdani.

This is what economic justice looks like.

And it's a reminder of how we can fight corporate greed at the state and local level. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2026/01/mamdani-ice-delivery-workers-settlement-backpay-uber-gig-workers-million/

I think the right lens to view this is as trying to create the legal pretext for nationalizing the midterms.

He shopped around the idea of cancelling elections altogether a few weeks ago. When that didn't go well, he settled on the next best thing.

i think if you post like this without offering concrete steps people can take to prepare for and respond to interference or without any acknowledgement of the success (or lack thereof) of this strategy then you are basically engaged in voter suppression.

No one is illegal, period.

Acts committed by people can be legal or illegal, people are not.

An undocumented person is no more an illegal alien than a person with a speeding ticket is an "illegal driver".
Even murderers are not called "illegal humans".

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

This is the thru line that connects the Confederacy to MAGA. For them, "all men are created equal" really means certain men.
And pro life only means certain lives, whether it's a person or a fetus. Abortion and contraception are evil, except when it's forced sterilization of the undesirables.
It’s the GOP Death Culture in action. They are “pro life“ but only for certain lives. It is indeed disgusting.

And do you happen to know anyone in Congress who can do something about it, *checks notes*, Senator?
Q: Are you willing to use every lever of power including a government shutdown to stop what's happening here?

KLOBUCHAR: Right now we're focused on getting ICE out of the state. Of course we will use every lever, but I do remind people that Trump runs the WH and sadly also seems to run Congress

I mean, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions is named after not one, but two Confederate generals.

But it only went downhill from there, didn't it? I remember back when the US Atty scandal from the Bush years with Alberto Gonzales was a big deal. Seems like a Sunday school picnic compared to this crew.
Jeff Sessions was the least racist, most apolitical, of all Trump's Attorneys General. Just think about how fucked up that is.

Renee Good was shot 3 times by ICE

The first two shots were non lethal. One to her left forearm & another to right breast

The final shot entered the left side of her head & exited the right side

He didn’t have to keep shooting. He was out of the vehicle’s path before the kill shot

That’s murder

I've been waiting for this.

Independent autopsy of Renee Good is in. It's strong evidence against Agent Ross, given what it means about the second or third shot through the left-side window.

It's the second and third shots that make the easiest criminal case of a willful killing.

Part infinity of reality overtaking satire, as well as of Trump's well known MO of pretending that the current status quo is some brand new bargain that he just struck.
COLLINS: Does it include the US having ownership of Greenland?

TRUMP: It's a long term deal. It's the ultimate long term deal

COLLINS: How long is it?

TRUMP: Infinite. There is no time limit. It's a deal that's forever.

The transcript doesn't quite do it justice. When Collins asks "How long is it, Mr President?" at the 24 second mark, I don't think the transcript conveys the sarcasm dripping from that question.

Call me picky, but I would like the nuclear football to be with someone who can at least get the name of the country right.
Trump is now confusing Greenland and Iceland: "They're not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you. Our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland has already cost us a lot of money."

Call me picky, but I would prefer the nuclear codes to be with someone who can at least get the name of the NATO ally that he is threatening right.
Trump on NATO: "Until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me. They called me daddy."

(He means Greenland.)
