Mandatory voting is a best practice democratic institution that enables representative democracy to work as best it can. When everyone votes, representatives have to worry about everyone's interests or risk being voted out. When only some vote, those who don't are vulnerable to exploitation.
When Australia holds its federal elections tomorrow, it’ll do so with the requirement that all eligible citizens head to the polls and vote.
