Hi folks. Gonna deactivate for a bit (prob. in an hour or a little less). I can panic or I can be a human being who cares for myself and other people in my life –– I can't do both.

Hope to be back in a few days or weeks. Feel free to find me elsewhere.

Big floods in Murray KY.

One more big day of storms today (we've received EIGHT inches of rain already since Wed. evening, neighboring counties have received more than 12) –– this is the first semester where I've viscerally felt that I'm teaching through and around climate change.

Hi. Things are awful but I came back from an out-of-town workshop today to a complimentary note from a colleague on my work. 💜

If you are an NC resident and voted in November, please check if your name or the names of any family areone of the 60K votes being challenged. If so, confirm ASAP with your Board of Elections. You only have two weeks.

The website to check linked in the reply.

NC Court of Appeals gives over 60,000 challenged voters 15 days to prove eligibility
The majority wrote that, even though they have the authority to completely throw out the contested ballots, they decided to instead mandate a cure period for most of the challenged voters.

I dreamed last night that the building I was in was on fire and I was struggling to put together a go bag and get out. As I did so, part of the upper-story wooden balcony lost integrity and fell to the ground.

Four months later, I've finally finished this book, and I can't recommend it enough –– you must read it. Not an easy read –– there is a reason it took me four months –– but an important one, especially at this historical moment. The audiobook is read by Gessen personally, which I appreciated.
folks am I gonna regret reading this (via audiobook) on my drive for Thanksgiving this year? it's about the right length –– 17 hrs for a 20 hr drive & fits into my special interest in soviet russian history but i've been dealing with a recurrence of health issues & am worried it's too grim

It's not a bad idea to go to the local Walmart or big box retailer and buy lots of consumables now. From toothpaste to soap, anything you can find storage space for, buy before they have to replenish inventory.

Even if it's made in the USA , they will jack up the price and blame it on tariffs.

Classes remote or cancelled at my university for the rest of the week, on account of a predicted FOOT of rain (or more) over the next four days. This is the second week lost to bad weather & I'm adding a new category for a no-note-needed excused absence: health, and also now extreme weather
