It's time I found a new contract, so...

If you’re looking for a backend dev (C#/C++), need a hand with build/test/deployment automation, or getting to grips with TDD/agile ways of working, etc. then I might be of use. London, Cambridgeshire, or remote.

Absolutely love how easy it is to get the apple password manager to "fill & save" a password, consigning the current password to the memory hole. 👹

You don’t need more time between releases.
You need less risk in each release.

Release ridiculously often — Doc Norton & Associates
The seventh behavior, “Release ridiculously often,” is usually met with nods from half of the crowd and raised eyebrows from the other half. The nodders want to know why it isn’t higher on the list…

A beautiful, crazy and amazing story of science right under our collective feet. I'd heard when the signal got originally reported but got distracted.

It's a great example of what makes science simultaneously fun, important and beautiful.
OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

Hey folks, quick/odd request.. if you *recently* read "Observability Engineering" and are up for a quick 15 min phone chat, within the next 6 hr, drop me a DM?

I am refactoring the chapter list (due @ noon Friday) and could use some fresh eyes on chapters to add/drop for 2nd edition. 🙏🥰

Thanks!

I'll be the controversial one: in this case, if NATS had never been given to the CNCF, I would argue they would be *less likely* to need to pull these shenanigans. They mortgaged their ability to build a lasting business and community to get access to more potential users.

NFL draft day!

Annual reminder that the median 5 year earnings for a big tech software engineer are *higher* than for an NFL player.

Higher.

They think I went in the first round.
They think I play in the NFL.
They think I'm scoring them touchdowns."

As you watch the NFL draft, it's time for your annual reminder that the median 5 year earnings for a silicon valley software engineer are *higher* than the median 5 year earnings for an NFL player.🙂🙃

This, I think, goes some way to explain why productivity gains reported by individual engineers using "AI" coding assistants evaporate at the level of what actually gets delivered at the team level. (See 2023/24 DORA reports).

Me: "You fired Tommy"
