They should certainly trail that, in the same way that the Tories trailed that Toby Young was in the frame to lead the OfS. Once the outrage had been sprayed across the sector they rowed back on it and appointed someone almost as ghastly with minimal protest

As a retired academic I’m allowed to say that this public art in Leuven sums up how I feel about the prospect of a committee meeting!

Exciting news from my Lord Clarivate, who tells me that one of my publications has been removed from my profile because an unnamed person thought they should. Not sure I can summon the energy to care

How come I can point my phone camera at any rectangular object and it will give me a face-on view of it, but I can't put an open book on a scanner and have it give me two page-images without pressing thirteen buttons and lining it up exactly right?

Y’day I posted about Sir Oswald Mosley’s pro-Nazi British Union of Fascists in the 1930s. Some comments on Facebook expressed support for Mosley and his ideology. I know you can’t really reason with people who will publicly support fascism but this is what Mosley’s ideology did to Southampton:

In Southampton yesterday there was a national call (via Turning Point, Tommy Robinson, etc) for an anti-migrant rally.
Very happy that even at short notice that march was outnumbered by about 50%.

Very sad to read that Nabil Shaban has died. A formidable activist and creative in all manner of ways. During a wideranging interview in 2016, I told him he was the very last person filmed by Derek Jarman while he still possessed sight. He didn't know and it moved him greatly.

Asia Market.
Ireland’s 1st Asian food shop, established in 1981. Much expanded now, with huge second outlet outside city.
I discovered it in early 1982. They used to sell samosas which a man cycled in from Ranelagh with.
And those rugby ball shaped sticky Chinese dumplings with pork inside.

HE thought experiment: You are the parent of an A-level student and you're helping them research universities. You discover a flaw in the metrics that convinces you that a particular institution is actually vastly better at teaching, research and student support than their ranking and offers suggest

I like to remind myself of this story any time I'm tempted to make a sacrifice for the good of my institution
Thinking back to this time five years ago when we had to drastically revise all our plans so we could deliver the programme online, or in reduced-occupancy sessions with students sitting apart , on a timetable that ensuresd that no room had two consecutive classes, to avoid mixing at changeover.
