For no good reason I started a project, listening to and rating every single UK number 1 single from 1960 to present out of 10. I then decided to average each year and rank them in order to find which year had the best number 1 singles. Thought I would share my results with #musicsky 1/2

I am hearing that on his deathbed Charlie Kirk received the light of Islam and unhesitatingly recited the Shahada. Even now he looks down on the Ummah from the gardens of Jannah. Truly there is no god but Allah, and Mohammad is his prophet!

We're at the absolute peak of glam rock here in 1973, with no.1s from Slade, Wizard, The Sweet and Suzi Quarto. #musicsky (1/3)

I paused this thankless task for a few weeks. It's because of years like 2014. It was harrowing to listen to. There were 38 no.1s, and most were painfully dull. (1/4) #musicsky

Something was killing Glasgow’s injecting drug users, and no one could be sure what it was or where it had come from."

The mid 2010s again, and another pretty nothing year in terms of No.1s, although our worst of the year stands out a mile. The year scored 4.83/10. #musicsky (1/3)

2007 scores 4.82/10. It starts and ends badly, with 4 1/10 songs, however it also features several extremely good no.1s, including 3 9/10s. Let's get the bad out the way. (1/5) #musicsky

A bit of a bizarre year for no.1s, scoring 4.82/10, in spite of having the 2 best no.1s of the entire decade. I'm actually calling a tie on the best no.1 of 1990. Let's get the bad stuff out the way first... (1/6) #musicsky

1972 has a pretty terrible reputation as year of novelty no.1s, however overall it's not as bad as what's come before, scoring 4.72/10. Some of the novelty tunes are bad, some probably better than you would think (1/3) #musicsky

I've moaned before about the early 1960s, but this is better. The lack of Cliff Richard and The Shadows might be a factor in my increased enjoyment of this year's no.1s. #musicsky (1/3)

4.67/10 Just 12, due to lengthy stays at no.1 for Shakespeare Sister (8wks) and Whitney Houston (10wks). I've no idea how this finished ahead of 1998, there is very little to like about 1992 #musicsky (1/4)

Very much the year the '80s pop bubble bursts. Things have been on a downward trajectory in the second half of the decade, and 1988 scores just 4.66/10. #musicsky (1/4)

One of those years that doesn't really feel like the '90s have started yet. There's not a lot especially good, and not a lot especially bad in 1993, which scored 4.6/10. Very much a year in search of an identity (1/3) #musicsky

The early '60s were a mystery to me before this, and it would have been no loss if they'd remained that way. 1962's scores 4.58/10. There's not much good though Ray Charles' "I Can't Stop Loving You" and the Tornadoes' "Telstar" are both quality. #musicsky (1/5)

Hurray - another year from the 2010s, scoring 4.54/10. Years in the 2010s were typically afflicted by a terrible X Factor/Britain's Got Talent winner - poor 2010 has 3, plus some other utter garbage. There are a couple of redeeming features. #musicsky (1/4)
