In 1697, seven Renfrewshire locals were sentenced to death for witchcraft.

They included two young brothers - the 'town rascals' -, beggars and a serving girl. The child who accused them was one of Erskine's wealthiest daughters.

Their deaths are said to have cursed Paisley to this day.
