Post-doc at UCalgary. Interested in how bones grow, bend, and break. Temporary research tangent studying the collective behaviour of muscles. Pro unsupervised safe-supply.
The Journal of Experimental Biology chose our article to be highlighted for the current issue. Kathryn Knight wrote a delightful pop-sci piece accompanied by a fun illustration.

Speed, not hill running, is main factor in shin stress fractures
For runners, pain is sometimes part of the process. Achy muscles after a particularly long run or shin splints when your shoes need replacing can be a gentle warning to ease off. But take training too...

We systematically explored the nature of sarcomere length non-uniformity using single myofibrils, and found that sarcomere length non-uniformity does NOT occur randomly in both active and passive states!

Gaining new understanding of sarcomere length non-uniformities in skeletal muscles
Sarcomere lengths are non-uniform on all structural levels of mammalian skeletal muscle. These nonuniformities have been associated with a variety of mechanical properties, including residual force en...

Why is this not standard practice? Although probably better without anonymous reviews. Maybe? Thoughts?

"In our open peer review model, we will publish the editorial decision letters, reviews (in anonymized form), and the authors' responses to the critiques along with the article."

Open peer review introduced at Journal of Neuroscience; reviewers can be anonymous, but review content will be open

Posting a preprint has become the moment that feels meaningful. As in: Here it is, the piece I worked so hard on, for the public to read and discuss.

The legacy publication process feels like a frustrating bureaucratic routine. I’m usually bored of the paper by the time it’s published.
Every new paper announcement that says "here's the thread I wrote about the preprint last year, which covers all the major points" sends an important message about the weird-ass current state of scientific publication.

Are highlights necessary in manuscripts? Do they increase the likelihood that someone will read the article? I guess I wonder what the utility is when the abstract is already a brief overview.
