It is a cop out to say Americans can't analyze/describe authoritarianism at home because we aren't used to it/it hasn't happened here. If you ask any Black person who survived Jim Crow, this is not unforseeable. We've sanitzed and emptied Civil Rights history to get to this point of misrecognition.

My first and definitely last time working with the Los Angeles Times. Editing out the most urgent point of an OpEd in the minutes before sending to press while then also assigning a title and image that suggest an argument entirely opposite to the author’s clear intent is pretty shitty.
