What would a TV ad promoting alternatives to driving look like? What if people who love cycling and progressive transportation reclaimed ideas like freedom, independence and even patriotism? We decided to give it a shot. Check out our new video, "America, It's Just Like Riding a Bike."

Jacob Geller has a phenomenal essay on the subjectivity of translation, the ways it inevitably changes the work, and how lack of cultural context impacts the interpretation

This thread is not only amusing, but I learned stuff about honeybees!
There's no other way to say this:
Bees and wasps make butt-shaped holes in their homes.

That's how they shape combs & nests & hives: their own butts (ok, 'abdomens').

But here's the real question to bake your noodle:
How does a bee's butt make a *hexagonal* honeycomb?

This is an excellent thread. Really solid advice on growing gingers, definitely give it a read if you have any interest in feline gardening.

Monday Morning Vibes:

Me, singing “🎵Conceal, Don’t Feel” to myself as I shove the doom box back into the closet after a weekend of telling myself I would sort through it and absolutely not doing that.

This is an amazing story. Houston criminalized feeding the homeless, Food not Bombs continued to do so, the city has ticketed them dozens of times and occasionally arrested members but hasn’t been able to get a single conviction. www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston...
Food Not Bombs trial rescheduled after too many jurors objected to $500 fine for feeding homeless
Roughly 90 tickets have been issued since March to volunteers with the loosely organized Food Not Bombs, which serves meals to people in need.

PSA: Being alarmed about climate change does not equal being an "alarmist."

The state of our climate right now is *objectively* alarming.

If you are *not* alarmed by it, you are not engaging with reality

Folks, celebrate your friends. I know you probably know this, but it's easy to forget. Take joy in their successes and cheer on their moments in the sun, and always let them know they make your life better. It matters.

US COVID SHOTS ARE FREE.

Please do not let Walgreens and CVS mislead you or your family members or neighbors about this! They are the biggest part of the federal bridge (free shots for uninsured people) program, but the rollout’s logistics have been a little scattered and you may get pushback.
PSA: the CDC has a program that pays for your COVID vaccine if your insurer won't. The guy at CVS told me that my insurer had not added the new vaccine to its formulary yet, so I'd need to pay $190. I told him about this program, showed him the website, and paid nothing. 🤗

In Rhetoric, Zeugma is when you use a word to have two different meanings in the same sentence.

From @clpolk.bsky.social’s book “Even Though I Knew The End”:

“She stole a kiss and my cigarettes before heading out”

“The bedsprings sang and Edith did too, because she was always a bit like music.”

I think it’s neat that the conversion ratio of km-to-miles is 1.61 km=1 mile.

This is almost the Golden Ratio (1.618) which can be approximated by ratios of the Fibonacci Sequence (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,…)

So that means that
3mi ~ 5 km
5mi ~ 8 km
8mi ~ 13 km
Etc

Maybe not useful, but neat!
