There’s something else that no one has been able to answer for me. As I understand it, private firms can’t simply offer to do government work for free. It’s a violation of the antideficiency act.

After Abrego Garcia was deported, the administration initially scrambled to try to figure out how to bring him home, admitting that his alleged gang ties were tenuous, at best.
Then the negative coverage started and they decided the fight would be a political win.

Over last 3 years, US has spent around 2.34 Trillion on defense preparing for, among others, Russia. In same period we spent $187 Billion supporting Ukraine beating Russia.
So: just 7.8 percent to defeat one of our biggest enemies, with no US losses
