I am a big believer in the teachers are heroes theory of the universe
Grizzly attack on 11 kids & teachers in BC.

“one teacher jumped in front of the bear to allow the children to get away…he jabbed the bear’s eyes with his fingers and that’s how he was able to… how the bear just left him.”

“That teacher was later airlifted from the scene.”

Teachers are heroes.

At a recent gathering of Rogers Park volunteers, we heard from a neighbor who choked up telling us about their dad turning around and going home when he heard whistles up the street. "One of you may have saved his life that day." It all matters, it really does.
One thing that is tough about rapid response/patrols, besides constantly being threatened by armed secret police, is that for the most part they see the defeats. There are exceptions, but you’ll never know how many people were saved by slowing feds down, whistles, community alerts, etc.

Agricultural economist and researcher Kindah Ibrahim has some ideas about how to start building a climate-resilient agriculture sector in Syria. One solution: Learning from the nation’s women and how they’ve kept certain agricultural practices alive amid the devastating conflict.
Kindah Ibrahim on Rebuilding Syria’s Agriculture Sector
Learning from how communities adapted during the conflict could help make the nation more resilient to climate change.

St. Louis is now the largest city in the nation to have passed an ethical investment resolution. Doing so is just the latest win for the St. Louis Palestine Solidarity Committee, which told me it "shows what’s possible when organized people act together." ✊

My hot take on _that_ story is that the editor should've chosen not to work with the writer and moved on, instead of writing and publishing what is more or less holier-than-thou long-form, doxxing a probably Black woman.

at this point, I basically live for a cold brew in the morning and one of the many chili sauces crammed in my fridge with lunch or dinner, like I'm just always looking forward to the next tasty treat as I put on a brave face and trudge through the doom and gloom

Israel is bombing Gaza again. The so-called ceasefire has only made it harder to draw attention to ongoing violence, but Sama'a and her family need us now more than ever.

The Museum of the City of New York has $70 million in assets and net income of over half a million in 2023, $3.5 million in 2022. But its director doesn't want to pay a copy editor.
"The director of the Museum of the City of New York, Stephanie Hill Wilchfort, said she no longer needs to hire copy editors to work on annual reports. [She is turning to AI.]"

This should be embarrassing to admit.
