Based on fossil fuel growth rates from the IEA Coal Mid-Year Update, July Oil Market Report, & Gas Market Report Q3, fossil CO2 emissions would grow around 0.8% in 2025, reaching another record high...

We are only half way through the year, but don't build too much expectation for peak emissions.

Arguably, being 40% poorer in a 4-degree warmer world would be the least of our problems, given this level of warming is almost certainly incompatible with any sort of organised society 🤷‍♂️ www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Experts say previous economic models underestimated impact of global heating – as well as likely ‘cascading supply chain disruptions’

While we can still limit warming by cutting emissions, we now face having to adapt to more extreme weather

I assume most people know this, but seems important to point out basic truths at this moment in time. There is no energy emergency in the U.S. The U.S. is the world's top producer of oil and gas at the moment, and the top exporter of gas, and U.S. oil and gas producers are making record profits.

Yes, this. Not to mention of course that as more people stop their insurance, premiums go up again - until no one can afford it and insurance companies go under…

"When famed climate scientist James Hansen warned of that effect in 2021 and projected a steep acceleration of warming, his findings were criticized by some other scientists [...] But aerosol-focused research since then, as well as continued warming into 2024, seems to support his conclusions."

This was such a good listen
Today on Volts: I talk with the estimable Cory Doctorow about enshittification (the inevitable rot & customer exploitation of tech platforms) and how it might manifest in clean-energy tech, which will soon be running our vehicles and homes. Much to worry about!

Can we avoid the enshittification of clean-energy tech?
Cory Doctorow describes how software platform technologies go wrong and what it might look like when our homes and vehicles are on those platforms.

This x1,000. It’s so hard to us to focus on climate when we have so many immediately pressing issues - which are exacerbated by lack of action on climate
This has always been my worst fear about climate change: the worse it gets, the more geopolitical chaos it causes; the more geopolitical chaos there is, the harder it is to cooperate to fight climate change.

A ‘doom loop’ of climate change and geopolitical instability is beginning
Climate change is driving inflation and instability, which harms climate action. But it’s not too late to escape the doom loop.
